Just this month alone, Russia has been shooting flares near US drones flying over Syria on missions to “defeat ISIS.” On July 23, a Russian Plane damaged a US drone with flares, hitting its propeller. Up until now, the flares only passed by the drones, not hitting them. Why the increase in aggression? Is Russia attempting to hide something in Syria?
“On 23 July, 2023 at 12:23 a.m. (EST) Russian fighter aircraft flew dangerously close to a U.S. MQ-9 drone on a defeat-ISIS mission, harassing the MQ-9 and deploying flares from a position directly overhead, with only a few meters of separation between aircraft. One of the Russian flares struck the U.S. MQ-9, severely damaging its propeller. Fortunately, the MQ-9 crew was able to maintain flight and safely recover the aircraft to its home base. The Russian fighter’s blatant disregard for flight safety detracts from our mission to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS. On July 5th and 6th, similar incidents showed Russian planes discharging flares at US drones. Also an incident on July 16 created a serious potential problem.
Earlier in July, fighter jets harassed U.S. MQ-9 drones three times in as many days, setting off flares and forcing the drones to take evasive maneuvers. Russian officials blamed targeting signals emitted from the American drones for triggering automatic alarms in the Russian jets and said the U.S. was trying to interfere with joint Russian and Syrian military exercises happening in norther(n) Syria at the time, according to state-run media outlet TASS.
A Su-35 jet few close to a U.S. MC-12, a manned surveillance aircraft, on July 16, creating a turbulent wake in the MC-12’s path that could have set conditions for accident and loss of life, U.S. officials said, according to The Associated Press. Daily Caller
It just happened that the incident on Sunday actually connected with a drone. The US Commander issued the statement that called for Russian forces to stop their reckless and unprofessional behavior. But if that’s all that happens, this kind of thing will likely get worse.

USAFCENT did not comment on the actual mission of the drones, nor did it mention the specific locations of where they were flying.
