Increasingly in this war on Coronavirus, pandemic drones are being used for various reasons: to monitor people in pandemic hotspots, and to warn people that they’re in nonessential areas and shouldn’t be there, among other things. This isn’t the Big Brother from George Orwell …or is it?
We try hard not to scare people even worse than the MSM is already, but this is something of which everyone should be aware. Technology is spawning an uncountable number of good things from medical breakthroughs to household help. But “pandemic drones?”
The Pandemic Drones
In Chula Vista, California, drones that were banned by the US Army in 2017 are being used during the COVID-19 lockdown, although Chula Vista police claim a totally benign reason for using them.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
“Also in August of 2019, through the tremendous generosity of the Chula Vista Police Foundation, CVPD was able to purchase two new DJI Matrice 210 V2 Drones. These new drones were a significant improvement to the operation and provided increase range and capability.” Chula Vista Calif
The US Army banned them out of cybersecurity concerns. And the Chinese maker, DJI, also claims there is no reason to worry. According to American Military News,
“In 2017, the U.S. Army ordered its soldiers to stop using DJI drones. The U.S. Department of the Interior also decided in October to ground its entire drone fleet, consisting out of mostly Chinese drones and components, out of concern the drones were relaying sensitive information about U.S. infrastructure back to China.”
The city of Chula Vista feels that using drones to monitor the lockdown is an important technology for the pandemic.
The Washington Examiner reported,
…”Started in 2016, the Chula Vista Police Department’s drone program has strong policies and procedures to protect the privacy and civil rights of the community, while providing critical real-time information to first responders,” the press release said. “The department has not changed how it has used drones during this emergency, but staff are considering how drones may improve communication with the public under certain limited circumstances.”…
…“What we saw in China, and what we’re probably going to see around the world, is using drones with cameras and loudspeakers to fly around to see if people are gathering where they shouldn’t be, and telling them to go home,” Gore said. “It seems a little Orwellian, but this could save lives.”
At the peak of China’s coronavirus outbreak, the country used talking drones to force citizens in certain areas to wear face masks.
“Where is your mask? Wear your mask!” operators of the drones asked passersby in Chinese.
A little Orwellian? How about a LOT Orwellian. The drone can be equipped with a loudspeaker, and cameras (even night vision for the very expensive models).
In Australia, a company called Draganfly created pandemic drones that can detect and monitor people with respiratory conditions.
“Using their onboard tech, the drones are capable of monitoring fever-associated temperature, heart and respiratory rates from a distance, as well as detecting people sneezing and coughing in crowds or places where groups of people may work or congregate.” Digital Trends
As you will see in the following video, some countries are even using drones to spray something over crowds to kill the virus. Having a drone flying over head can now be moved from the curious category to the potentially sinister. We went to bed in 2020 and woke up in 1984.
