Nord Stream Pipelines 1 and 2 Damaged by Explosions: CIA Warned Germany Previously

Explosions struck the Nord Stream 1 and 2 Pipelines, which guarantees that no gas will flow to Europe this winter. The pipelines under the Baltic Sea were rocked by explosions which caused leakages in what is being described as possible sabotage. The CIA warned Germany earlier this year that the pipelines could be the target of attacks. It is highly unlikely that these were a technical glitch, or coincidences.

The three leaks on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which are filled with natural gas but not delivering the fuel to Europe, overshadowed the inauguration of a long-awaited pipeline that will bring Norwegian gas to Poland to bolster the continent’s energy independence from Moscow.

The first explosion was recorded early Monday southeast of the Danish island of Bornholm, said Bjorn Lund, director of the Swedish National Seismic Network. A second, stronger blast northeast of the island that night was equivalent to a magnitude-2.3 earthquake. Seismic stations in Norway and Finland also registered the explosions…

The extent of the damage means the Nord Stream pipelines are unlikely to be able to carry any gas to Europe this winter even if there was political will to bring them online, analysts at the Eurasia Group said. Russia has halted flows on the 760-mile Nord Stream 1 pipeline during the war, while Germany prevented them from ever starting in the parallel Nord Stream 2. (Fox)

Germany believes it was the work of saboteurs. So who were they? Did Russia sabotage their own infrastructure because they didn’t want to give energy to Germany? The tension between Europe and Russia has been extreme as Europeans struggle to find energy to heat their homes this winter.

The pipeline network consists of two pipelines, Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2, that run a collective 2,456 kilometers (1,526 miles) beneath the Baltic Sea. Nord Stream 1 has an annual capacity of 55 billion cubic meters (1.9 trillion cubic feet) of natural gas, while Nord Stream 2 has not yet entered service, but would double this volume. While both pipelines were not flowing when the leaks began, they did contain natural gas, leading to areas of bubbling water in the Baltic Sea. The leaks were first noticed by the Norwegian Armed Forces’ F-16 interceptor response unit.

An investigation into the explosions is currently underway.  Officials say the evidence thus far points to sabotage rather than earthquakes or any natural phenomena.
