Kellyanne Conway: Americans Support Republican Election Integrity Laws (Video)

The Republican National Committee (RNC) this week released the findings of a new poll that finds two-thirds of voters rank election integrity as one of their top concerns going into next year’s midterm elections.

The RNC commissioned Kellyanne Conway, pollster and senior advisor to former President Donald Trump, to conduct the nationwide survey of voters from across the political spectrum.

RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said she commissioned the poll to fight back on a “really, really dishonest narrative by Democrats that election integrity measures are racist and meant to make it harder for people to vote.”

The new Election Integrity Polling Project included these key findings:

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

  • More than 80% of all voters say verifying voter ID is an important security measure; nearly all have driver’s licenses or another form of ID and think it is easy to acquire ID.
  • 87% of voters said they were against ballot harvesting and 71% of voters believe ballots should not be accepted after election day.
  • The nationwide poll was conducted with 800 registered voters, with 31% identifying as Democrats, 29% as Republicans, and 36% as Independents.

“Election integrity is very much on the minds of American voters right now,” said Conway. “Americans want to make sure that post-pandemic, we get voter integrity measures right, that they’re fair to everyone, and that we don’t use as an excuse measures that were very specific to a once in a century pandemic.”

In an interview with McDaniel’s “Real America” podcast, Conway elaborated on the poll results which she said are an “indictment of the Biden-Harris policies.”  Conway said at the start of a president’s term, people are generally supportive and more willing to give a president the benefit of the doubt. But that is not happening this time.

“People always want to rally around the flag,” Conway explained. “Normally, they want to support their new administration’s because they love this country.” Conway said this poll shows voters “can’t even pretend that things are going well.”

“They can’t pretend that energy workers did not lose their jobs as they did with the Keystone Pipeline,” Conway added. “They can’t pretend that the cost of living, the cost of gas, the cost of groceries, and everyday life isn’t going up.  People are worried about inflation. They’re worried about finding workers for their small businesses.”

Conway went on to say that “people know what they see and what they see is a porous border, where people and drugs are just flooding over our southern border and into our communities.”

Conway said the poll shows voters overwhelmingly believe it is easy to vote. “They want to make sure that voting is easy and accessible,” Conway explained. “But they also make sure that it’s legal, and it’s transparent, and that it’s verifiable.” By verifiable, Conway means voter ID and signature verification.

“Making sure that the most sacrosanct principle in the Constitution is upheld, the one-person-one-vote principle, should not be controversial,” Conway added.

The poll results showed that voters also want to have early and absentee votes counted on the day of the election, not later.

“Counting them in a timely fashion helps with transparency and competency,” Conway said. “In our Democracy, just as in every other part of your life, you have to do things when they’re due. People cannot believe that we’re counting votes, so much later and longer. People oppose votes being counted that aren’t postmarked by election day. You can’t do that with your college applications, you can’t do that with the IRS.”

Conway explained that the longer vote-counting takes, the less trust people have. “They start to have concerns about shenanigans going on,” Conway added.

As well they should. State and local election boards made a lot of mistakes in the 2020 elections. Republican state legislatures and governors are passing common sense reforms to ensure they don’t happen again. America spends millions of dollars teaching developing democracies how to run transparent, honest elections abroad. We need to follow our own advice. The polls show the voters support Republican reforms.
