Responding to a rhetorical question posed Sunday by President Barack Obama during his remarks about the Orlando terror attack – that Americans must decide if they want a nation with so-called “easy access” to guns – the head of a major gun rights organization said this:
“We want a country where the Second Amendment is treated as the fundamental, individual civil right it protects.”
The president told reporters Sunday, “This massacre is therefore a further reminder of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on a weapon that lets them shoot people in a school, or a house of worship, or a movie theater, or a nightclub. And we have to decide if that’s the kind of country that we want to be.”
But Alan Gottlieb, founder and executive vice president of the Second Amendment Foundation, responded, “Americans want a country where they’re not demonized and treated like criminals just because they want to exercise that right.”
Gottlieb also reacted to comments made yesterday in Cleveland by would-be Obama successor Hillary Rodham Clinton. She told a crowd that “weapons of war” must be removed from the streets, according to published reports.
“Hillary Clinton needs to open her eyes,” Gottlieb observed. “Terrorists are at war with us and are bringing that war to our streets. The murderous attacks in San Bernardino and Orlando underscore the need for all Americans to be able to fight back. But in the world Obama and Clinton want to create, they would disarm the citizens and deny that the terrorists exist.
Clinton wants people on the “no-fly list” to be unable to buy guns. There has been no indication that the Orlando killer’s name was on a no-fly list.
“You shouldn’t be able to exploit loopholes and evade criminal background checks by buying online or at a gun show,” Clinton added.
But the Orlando mass killer bought his guns at retail and passed background checks.
