College Students Threatened with Expulsion for Doing This…
Two San Diego State University Students are under fire for hanging the American flag and a couple of military ones from their dormitory balcony. The school says the flags must come down immediately.
College students
Cameron Box, an Active Duty U.S. Coast Guard member, and his roommate, Connor Fenwick, a student who wants to go into the Army, have said they do not want to remove the flags.
“We’re just being proud of what we’re affiliated with.” Cameron Box
“Why can’t we have our First Amendment rights?” Connor Fenwick
The school has said alternately that the flags are a “fire hazard” and that the flags “block visibility.” The paper signed by both boys at the beginning of their tenancy does state that nothing can be hung from the balcony.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
A local news station contacted ACLU for their opinion. [Frankly many of us do not care about the ACLU opinion.] The ACLU representative stated that the school was well within their rights to demand removal of the flags.
“I think the university is within its rights to prohibit hanging anything from a balcony… I certainly defend the students’ right to express themselves and their patriotism, but they probably need to find another way to do it.” David Loy, legal director for the ACLU in San Diego.
The school has stated that the boys can appeal the decision, but if they lose, they could be expelled. They have stated that if it comes to that, they will remove the flags so they won’t lose their scholarships.
Freedom? What Freedom?
There was a day when flying the American flag was thought of as a sign of patriotism. The sight of Old Glory waving in the breeze used to create a welling up of tears in the eyes of Americans. Now it seems to bring condemnation and demands to remove it.
Finding “some other way” of expressing their patriotism could be challenging for the two young men at SDSU. The continual demands to remove flags across the country has brought America into a place of submission to other cultures and liberal rules, leaving our flag and our citizens alone to fight their battles.
“…Oh, say does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave, O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?” Francis Scott Key, September 14, 1814
