Deceased Bernie supporter who shot Rep. Steve Scalise on Facebook: ‘Trump is a traitor’

On Wednesday, a man identified as 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson opened fire on Republicans practicing for a charity baseball game, wounding Rep. Steve Scalise and at least three others.  According to reports, Hodgkinson died from wounds he received during the gun battle.  But who, exactly, was this man and what did he believe?

According to what has been identified as just one of his Facebook pages, Hodgkinson hated President Trump and called him a “traitor” and called for his “destruction.”

“Trump is a Traitor. Trump Has Destroyed Our Democracy. It’s Time to Destroy Trump & Co,” he wrote.

We took a screenshot of the post in the event Facebook removes his page:

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

A second Facebook page in his name was discovered, but as of this writing, has already been removed.

A post at Heavy.com noted:

On a second Facebook page in his name, Hodgkinson wrote two days ago, “I Want to Say Mr. President, for being an a*s hole you are Truly the Biggest A*s Hole We Have Ever Had in the Oval Office.”

On June 12, he wrote, “Make America Great Again, Resign!,” along with a meme of Trump with the words, “All in all it’s just another prick in the wall.” He also wrote, “Trump is Guilty & Should Go to Prison for Treason” and “Trump is a Mean, Disgusting Person.”

He has been critical of the Trump administration and called for Democrats to fight against it.

NBC’s Katy Tur noted some of Hodgkinson’s group memberships:

“Terminate the Republican Party?”  Seriously?

According to a neighbor, Hodgkinson was a hardcore Democrat who had a single Sanders sign in his yard.  The neighbor told the Belleville News-Democrat that perhaps “this Democratic rhetoric made him snap. I know he was a pretty hardcore Democrat.”

Heavy.com added:

Hodgkinson campaigned for Sanders in Iowa while the Vermont lawmaker was running for the Democratic presidential nomination last year, the Washington Post reports.

Charles Orear, 50, of St. Louis, who worked alongside him, called Hodgkinson a passionate progressive who showed no signs of violence or malice toward others.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Orear told the newspaper. “I met him on the Bernie trail in Iowa, worked with him in the Quad Cities area.”

He said Hodgkinson was a “quiet guy,” “very mellow, very reserved,” who stayed with him at a fellow Sanders’s supporters home in Illinois.

But as Rush Limbaugh said Wednesday morning, something had to have radicalized him to the point that he took up arms against elected Republicans.

We’ll get into that in another post, but one thing is certain: This is the modern left, and there’s no telling how many more crazed leftists like Hodgkinson are out there.
