Will Smith on Alabama election: ‘This is the purge, right?’

While appearing at a California press event, actor Will Smith weighed in on the special election in Alabama in somewhat apocalyptic terms, making a statement similar to one he made during last year’s general election.

“This is the purge, right? This is the cleanse, this is what happens. This is the natural reaction to the amount of light that came into the world when Barack Obama was president,” he said.

Writing at Newsbusters, Corinne Weaver reported:

Given that Smith was one of the original Obama fangirls, who told alleged sex harasser Matt Lauer that “it just hasn’t been a good thing to be American” until Obama was elected in 2008, the reaction was normal.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

But Smith didn’t stop there. He continued in his rant, “We had to expect that [the pendulum] was going to go the other way. As a cleanse — this is the darkness before the dawn.”

In the year 2016, Smith used the same kind of language to describe Trump supporters, saying, “As painful as it is to hear Donald Trump talk and as embarrassing as it is as an American to hear him talk, I think it’s good. [W]e get to know who people are and now we get to cleanse it out of our country.”

It’s not the first time he’s made these kind of statements, as Breitbart.com observed:

In an appearance on The Tonight Show last month, Smith expressed hope that the country could undergo a similar “cleansing,” as racist incidents are increasingly captured on film across America.

“When everything gets out, it’s a good thing,” Smith told Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon. “It just sucks bad when the truth is out. But I think everybody can see it now. And I think it’s just a little darkness before the cleansing that we’ll have as we move forward.”

According to Weaver, Smith concluded:

“I feel very, very strongly that we are shifting into what the next age of humanity is going to be right now. It’s just the sh*t that has to get stirred up, in a way. We’re seeing it all. It’s going to be really interesting to see how humanity reacts to it, and it’s going to be a f*****g mess. It’s going to be a mess, but it’s the mess in the cleanup. It’s the mess and the purge before that new, real light shows up.”

Which makes us wonder, how, exactly, does Smith want to purge and cleanse the country?  Or do we really need to ask?
