The Credit Card Company Visa added a separate category for your purchases at gun shops. Even though the vast majority of gun purchases do not result in mass shootings, the new merchandise code could easily result in significant problems for legal gun owners. Visa joins American Express and Mastercard in categorizing gun shop purchases under a separate code used by the International Organization for Standardization (IOS).
Before the change, gun shop purchases were coded as “general merchandise” and were not as trackable. While other items purchased at gun stores will be placed in the category, such as gun safes, holsters, ammunition, etc, having the ability to track such purchases could be an issue of stepping on the 2nd Amendment.
Gun control advocates wanted the government to be able to track large quantities of gun store purchases that may forewarn of a mass shooting. The ISO code was pushed by New York City officials and pension funds.
“Visa, which acts as a middleman between merchants and banks, is the largest payment network. And with three major payment processors all electing to label gun store sales, there will now likely be pressure placed on banks as card issuers to decide if they will permit purchases categorized as gun shop sales on their issued cards…
Gun control advocates claim that the merchant code for standalone gun and ammunition retailers could curb gun violence. A week before the 2016 Pulse Nightclub mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, the gunman purchased more than $26,000 worth of guns and ammunition using credit cards.
However, gun rights advocates contest that tracking gun store sales would target legal gun purchases because merchant codes only label the type of merchant where the credit or debit card is used, not the specific items. The purchase of a gun safe, for example, could be seen as a large purchase at a gun shop since the item can be bought for thousands of dollars. But a gun safe is a product considered to be part of responsible gun ownership.” Fox Business.
Separate merchandise codes are used for everything from groceries to clothing under the IOS, and gun control advocates say that it simply means “common sense” to add the code for guns. But those other purchases are not constitutionally specific…firearms are under the 2nd Amendment.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
Should the banks in question decide to prohibit gun store sales on their credit cards, the backdoor to destroying the Constitution entirely has been set in place.
