Virginia Bill HB 1627–Threats and Harassment of Dems Now A Crime?

Just after VA Democrats went after the 2nd amendment with the fervor of a bull at at bullfight, now they are pushing Virginia Bill HB 1627. It creates a special crime to threaten or harass certain government members. (BigLeaguePolitics).

Here is the bill summary:

“Threats and harassment of certain officials and property; venue. Provides that certain crimes relating to threats and harassment may be prosecuted in the City of Richmond if the victim is the Governor, Governor-elect, Lieutenant Governor, Lieutenant Governor-elect, Attorney General, or Attorney General-elect, a member or employee of the General Assembly, a justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia, or a judge of the Court of Appeals of Virginia. In addition, threats to damage property may be prosecuted in the City of Richmond if the property is owned by the Commonwealth and located in the Capitol District.”

Filed by Democrat Delegate Jeffrey Bourne, the bill appears to criminalize free speech against certain elected Virginia officials. In particular, Democrat elected officials. Virginia Bill HB 1627. Though his bill mentions criminal misdemeanors, it’s already against the law in Virginia to commit threats of harm or damage to property.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

“If any person, with the intent to coerce, intimidate, or harass any person, shall use a computer or computer network to communicate obscene, vulgar, profane, lewd, lascivious, or indecent language, or make any suggestion or proposal of an obscene nature, or threaten any illegal or immoral act, he is guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor.” HB 1627

Is it not illegal to threaten to kill anyone, let alone a public official? Is it not illegal to threaten to bomb or otherwise damage their property? This bill seems to create a new class of crime- for certain officials only.

Here is the Virginia law as it stands now:

“Issuing a threat of harm is a Class 6 felony under Virginia criminal laws, which carries with it a penalty of 1-5 years in prison. If that threat is terroristic in nature, with the intent to commit terrorism, it is a Class 5 felony, which has penalties of 1-10 years in prison if you are found guilty.” Virginia Law

What is harassment? Is standing against something proposed by a politician considered a crime now? What happened to allowing “redress of grievances” to our leadership? Our founding fathers were specifically interested in protecting speech related to the political realm.

One day after the Virginia Gun rally, Democrats effectively killed Republican pro-gun bills and shoved Red Flag laws through the legislature. Now they’re attempting to stop the opinions of the opposition. They’re on a roll.

“Wow on cue, now they are after the 1A! Dems are trying to set up special rules exclusive to the Elite ruling class, to protect themselves from criticism!” Delegate Nick Freitas (R)
