Universal Background Checks No Longer on the Table?

Wayne LaPierre, head of the NRA tweeted that the President assured him that universal background checks are no longer on the table, according to the Gateway Pundit.

I spoke to the president today. We discussed the best ways to prevent these types of tragedies. @realDonaldTrump is a strong #2A President and supports our Right to Keep and Bear Arms! – Wayne LaPierre

Gun grabbers are unhappy. Gun rights advocates are still a little worried, as he made no mention of red flag laws. On August 9, President Trump was still on the universal background checks bandwagon after confabbing with Democrats in Congress.
“We have tremendous support for really common sense, sensible, important background checks.” President Trump (August 9)

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
President Trump reportedly called embattled NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre on Tuesday to tell him universal background checks were off the table as a legislative response to the shootings in El Paso and Dayton.
The call, reported by The Atlantic, is the latest, and most direct, case of Trump backing away from a proposal that he seemed to embrace in the aftermath of those two recent mass shootings. And it left officials on the Hill scrambling for answers. One office that has consulted with the White House on background checks legislation said that they had not been informed that the president was shelving the idea, despite the report.
What’s up? Has he actually shelved the idea of universal background checks or is this his way of “negotiating” with the NRA for tougher gun control elsewhere?
Specifically, we are most concerned with “red flag” laws. We’ve had background checks for decades and they’ve never stopped even one mass shooting. Manipulating them the way the gun-grabbers want would be ineffective. But red flag laws actually destroy due process.
President Trump has to walk a fine line that could easily cause significant damage to his support base. Though we understand that he wants to stop mentally ill people from getting guns, the plain fact is that there are evil people in the world, particularly criminals. No one will ever find them all, and no amount of new gun control laws will expose them. Allowing equally bad people the ability to turn in a law abiding gun owner is the wrong approach.
“A lot of the people that put me where I am are strong believers in the Second Amendment.” President Trump
Please remember that, Mr President.
