The ship that hit the Brooklyn Bridge and killed two military cadets was a Mexican ship. Not an American ship, a Mexican ship called the Cuauhtémoc. The training ship lost power and due to the currents drifted into the Bridge. The “tall ship” configuration meant that masts were too high to get under the edifice, so it crashed. An investigation is underway, but Schumer tried to use the tragedy as political fodder and failed miserably. Some of the backlash was epic.
Here’s part of what he said:
“Bridges serve as critical transportation arteries for commerce, emergency response, and daily travel, and many span key waterways that are vulnerable to both natural and man-made threats. The Coast Guard plays a crucial role in monitoring and securing these areas, deterring potential terrorist attacks, preventing illegal activities, and responding quickly to emergencies. At the same time, maintaining the structural integrity and safety of America’s bridges is critical to the economy and the well-being of communities. A failure or attack on a major bridge could disrupt supply chains, endanger lives, and cause massive economic losses. It is unacceptable that the Trump administration is potentially jeopardizing our national and economic security – as well as American lives.” Senator Chuck Schumer (Fox Digital)
What a clown. First off, the Coast Guard responded by reminding him that they had full capacity, and did not fail to respond quickly to the incident. Secondly, the Mexican ship was damaged, but the bridge was not. Thirdly, the Coast Guard’s Vessel Traffic System was not subject to a hiring freeze. The only part of the USCG affected was the Logistics Information Management System – which was deemed ineffective.

For its part, the USCG posted a response to the situation:
Sector New York immediately launched a crew from Coast Guard Station New York to the scene and established a safety zone from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Manhattan Bridge. New York Vessel Traffic Services suspended commercial traffic in the area. The injured personnel were transported to local hospitals in Manhattan. The Cuauhtémoc is currently moored at Pier 36 on the East River as damage assessments and future actions for the salvage plans for the vessel are being determined. Sector New York has established a 50-yard safety zone around the vessel. At this time, vessels transiting the area have been requested to proceed at slow speed. The Coast Guard’s Vessel Traffic Service is actively monitoring the situation, and the NYPD is providing 24/7 patrols of the safety zone. The incident investigation is in progress and being actively coordinated between the governments of Mexico and United States, including the United States’ National Transportation Safety Board and Coast Guard.
Gee, you mean they did what they were supposed to do? Schumer is convinced that DOGE cuts ruined the Coast Guard. His politicization of everything that happens is past stupid.
Schumer is just searching for an easy way to become relevant again! If this ship crashing into the Brooklyn Bridge is because of Doge cuts then what was the cause of the ship crashing into and destroying the Francis Scott Bridge! I guess it had to be the other D, Dumbicrats! Yup!

There you have it. There are hundreds of posts hitting back at Schumer after his ridiculous statement about the Mexican ship disaster. Two people died, 17 were injured. He didn’t care about them, only wanted to blame Trump and DOGE for a tragedy they had nothing whatsoever to do with. Somebody PLEASE vote this idiot out of office!
