Seminole County Sheriff: I Will NOT Enforce Gun Registration

As we previously reported, Florida is in the midst of a pitched battle over their Constitution. It’s centered on the plan to get a Florida Constitutional amendment added to the ballot that  bans certain guns. Though the group likely won’t make the 766,000 signatures by the Feb 1 deadline, they’ll keep at it. In many cases, the left has shoved through initiatives (example: I-1639 in Washington) that otherwise might have failed in the legislature. Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma made it clear that he will not enforce that amendment if it passes.

The amendment proposal states in part:

“…Prohibits possession of assault weapons, defined as semiautomatic rifles and shotguns capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition at once, either in fixed or detachable magazine, or any other ammunition-feeding device. …Requires registration of assault weapons lawfully possessed prior to this provision’s effective date…”

In a recent speech to a group of gun rights advocates on Monday, Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma was asked point blank if he would enforce the amendment if it became law.

Gunpowder Magazine reported,

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

“It’s up to the sheriffs what they are willing to enforce,” explained Lemma, referring to legal doctrine set forth in the landmark Supreme Court case Printz vs United States.

White followed up with a question about the constitutional amendment currently being proposed in Florida called “Ban Assault Weapons Now,” which would ban possession of semi-automatic rifles and shotguns but require registration for those already owned by law-abiding gun owners to be grandfathered in.

“Would you enforce that provision of the state constitution on people that are refusing to register their weapons that they already own?” White asked.

Sheriff Lemma very quickly and decisively responded that: “Not only I wouldn’t, the majority of the Sheriffs across the state wouldn’t.”

A “grandfather clause” doesn’t mean beans. That was a compromise put into the proposal to attempt to quell the anger. The Constitution flatly states “keep and bear arms.” While the left rages that we who voted for Trump are “lawless” they are the ones advocating for clear violations of the law of the land. We will KEEP our arms and bear them when necessary.

Any Sheriff in any county in the United States who stands with leftists is not worth their weight in potato chips. But those who honor their oath, those who understand that the Second Amendment is not about hunting or target practice, those are the ones worthy of the votes that put them into office.
