Oregon Rebellion: Several Sheriffs Say They Won’t Enforce New Gun Law

Oregon’s Measure 114 is billed as the most extreme gun control law in America. It passed in the midterms, but several county Sheriffs say they won’t enforce it.

“Oregon faces a crisis in its criminal justice system because the leftists elements in Salem have refused to hold criminal[s] accountable for their behavior. Banning large capacity magazines will only turn law-abiding citizens into criminals. Assuming that restricting magazines to 10 rounds will make you safe is one of the most ignorant statements ever made…The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will not enforce Measure 114.” Jefferson County Sheriff Jason Pollock

Sheriff Pollock is correct. The law targets law-abiding citizens, not criminals. And the people noticed: only 6 out of Oregon’s 29 counties voted for the measure.  Of course because the 6 counties have the highest population, rural Oregon was basically left out of the election.

Measure 114 or the “Gun Violence Reduction Act” outlaws magazines over 10 rounds. The law requires police to maintain a searchable public database of all who apply to obtain a gun permit (without providing any funding for law enforcement to do it). A permit is required to even purchase a gun under the new law. Never mind that the Federal government already has a requirement for a background check to purchase a gun, Oregon took it a step farther by mandating that anyone who applies must ‘bring a firearm to police and demonstrate the ability to load, unload, fire and store the weapon.’ Only Oregon law prohibits people from loaning a firearm to anyone. So they can’t buy one without a permit, but they can’t get a permit without a firearm. [Oregon attorney in The Epoch Times] Catch 22.

Malheur county voted against Measure 114 nearly 6 to 1, according to Fox News.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

“I want to send a clear message to Linn County residents that the Linn County Sheriff’s Office is NOT going to be enforcing magazine capacity limits. This measure is poorly written and there is still a lot that needs to be sorted out regarding the permitting process, who has to do the training and what exactly does the training have to cover. We want to ensure anything we do or don’t do will not hinder gunowners’ rights to purchase firearms, intentionally or unintentionally.” Linn County Sheriff Michelle Duncan

Measure 114 is “not going to be a priority, or really even much of a consideration [for his department]. It would take away from the things that we’re doing every day to try to keep people safe. Restricting people from ownership of guns in my opinion, is not going to help anything. We’re going to make it harder for people to purchase guns for self-defense.” Malheur County Sheriff Brian Wolf

“The biggest thing is this does absolutely nothing to address the problem. The problem that we have is not… magazine capacity. It’s not background checks. It’s a problem with mental health awareness. It’s a problem with behavior health illness…There’s just no way possible for us to enforce that and nor would I simply because it’s an infringement on our Second Amendment, you know, our right to keep and bear arms. If you believe that this measure is going to cut the school shootings down, or cut the gun violence down, you’re sadly mistaken. But what has proven [to work] time and time again is… supporting your law enforcement, responsible gun ownership, teaching our children at a younger age respect for human life. That’s what we need to fall back on.” Union County Sheriff Cody Brown

There you have it. Leftists in the larger areas ruled the roost on November 8. And now there’s an Oregon rebellion forming. They have no one to blame but themselves. Sheriffs are hoping for a giant-sized lawsuit as quickly as possible against the unconstitutional law. The Supreme Court recently ordered the 9th Circuit Court to revisit its ruling upholding a similar magazine ban in California.
