Michigan National Guard Food Issues on DC Deployment: Not Enough Food, Metal Shavings, Raw Food. WTH is Going on in DC? Bring the Troops Home Now!

First they shoved National Guard Troops into a subzero parking garage, which caused 8 states to recall their members. Now we learn of “ill prepared” food being given to Michigan National Guard members that made them sick, even food with metal shavings in it. Breakfasts have been less than nutritious on top of it. At least 12 service members became ill and some were taken to the hospital. Both quantity and quality of the food was a problem.

A whistleblower is telling 7 Action News nearly 75 meals were thrown out Sunday after metal shavings were found, other meals showed up undercooked making soldiers sick.

A staff sergeant with the Michigan National Guard, whose identity 7 Action News is protecting, says the problem is not isolated.

“Yesterday, for instance, there were 74 different meals found with raw beef in them,” the sergeant said. “Just yesterday, the lunches were, soldiers had found metal shavings in their food.”

The food concerns going beyond quality – quantity is an issue as well. Breakfast is an example.

The undercooked meals had to travel for about 1/2 hour, according to Brian Abel’s report. If you undercook meat to only 140 degrees, and then put it in a car and transport it, it will never each optimum temperature. After the food issues with the Michigan National Guard troops, they were given MREs instead.

Raw chicken, raw beef, metal shavings, juice and a roll…these are egregious violations. The food, or lack thereof, came from a food service contracted by the main National Guard in DC. Michigan Governor Whitmer called to voice her displeasure.

The Michigan National Guard finds the reports of undercooked and poorly prepared food provided to our service members in Washington D.C. very concerning. The firsthand accoutns and pictures of undercooked food being served clearly shows what is being given to Michigan’s service members is unacceptable. As soon as the first reports were received, Governor Gretchen Whitmer called Acting Secretary of the Army John E. Whitley to communicate Michigan’s concerns. Other Michigan senior leaders also engaged at the highest levels of the federal government to inform those in charge and to ensure that they knew of our displeasure with the conditions. Every assurance was given that the issue would be addressed and corrected...

Michigan National Guard response

Washington DC has several restaurant venues that service legislators. The Senate cafeteria is lavish, filled with culinary delights that fill the huge room. What they throw away would be better than what the troops were fed. Feeding our troops crap is unacceptable. The Democrats want the National Guard there, they’d better start treating them with respect and honor. Or, a better solution: every state take their National Guard back home. Let the Democrats eat the raw food and metal shavings.
