Knoxville, TN – A resolution passed this week in Knoxville requested the Mayor to ban gun shows on city property. It’s just a resolution, but it passed 8-1. Mayor Madeline Rogero has made it clear she will not allow any more gun shows after this year. There are two under contract in November and December. Next year, there will be a new Mayor, but both persons running have expressed support for the idea.
When did Tennessee turn blue? It used to be a relatively safe red state, even with the large metropolitan areas having a lot of Democrats. Now we have a city council for a city with a population near 200,000 deciding that gun violence should cause gun shows to be kicked out off city property.
One East Knoxville resident said “it’s not a good look” to have a gun show in an area with a high gun crime rate. A “good look?” What about the people problem? What about the education, lack of morality, and other issues that are causing the violence?
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
Two women whose sons were killed in a drive-by shooting attended the meeting.
WBIR reported,
“My son, he was killed by a gun. And I’m going to stand up and fight for him and other children as well,” said Dobson.
Whether the vote was merely symbolic or not, Dobson said symbolism, unity, and the support of friends matters.
“We have protested these gun shows before. And my friend [Terry Walker-Smith] lost her son to gun violence. We support each other. We’ve had many a nights that we cry about our children. And we have to go to the cemetery to visit. And that’s not fun. We want to stand up and push forward because innocent lives do matter,” said Dobson.
“We feel like with this vote, our voices were heard,” said Terry Walker-Smith.
We totally agree that the death of their sons was a horrible tragedy, but a gun didn’t kill them. Someone pulled that trigger – a person, a criminal, a man with evil intent. Criminals do not pay any attention to laws. Gang violence is a systemic problem in many US cities – and gangs can get guns anywhere.
Punishing the law abiding citizens is wrong, not to mention unconstitutional. It will not solve the problem, neither will driving gun shows off public property.
In Knoxville there are other privately owned venues that can have gun shows in the future, barring any new moves by the city council. But this penchant in America for emotional responses to everything is destroying the rights of citizens.
