Democrats’ Dilemma: They need Senate to push radical agenda

Mitch McConnell Obamacare repeal
If Mitch McConnel and Republicans retain control of the U.S. Senate, the radical far left Democrat agenda could be stopped cold.

Democrats have a dilemma, according to a report at Fox News, and it boils down to control of the U.S. Senate.

As the story explained, “Democrats have privately acknowledged that if Republicans retain control of the Senate and Mitch McConnell remains majority leader, the progressives have no chance of confirmation.”

Instead of bolstering their majority in the House, Nancy Pelosi’s Democrats lost ground as several GOP candidates—many of them conservative women—beat Democrat incumbents Nov. 3. That’s going to dilute Pelosi’s power, along with that of “The Squad,” that cadre of socialist Democrats led by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

But the Senate is key to allowing Democrats to push their radical agenda, which includes rejoining the Paris Agreement on climate change, extremist gun control, stopping construction of the southern border wall and increasing taxes.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

As if to underscore what many believe is a woeful lack of economic understanding, Sen. Kamala Harris—Joe Biden’s running mate and presumptive vice president-elect—tweeted, “As president, @JoeBiden will make corporations and the wealthiest finally pay their fair share—and he won’t ask a single person making under $400,000 per year to pay a penny more in taxes.”

Evidently, Harris doesn’t understand that the cost of any additional corporate taxes would be essentially passed on to consumers through higher prices. It’s not an additional tax on average citizens, but it’s disingenuous for Democrats to suggest that typical taxpayers will not end up with less money in their wallets. Meanwhile, wealthy people hire accountants to keep their tax bills down, and Democrats know this as well.

In the midst of this, a new Rasmussen poll released Thursday shows 64 percent of “likely voters” believe the country is more divided than it was four years ago, which is actually an improvement over when Barack Obama left office. At that time, Rasmussen recalled, 72 percent of survey respondents felt the country was more divided.

What GOP control of the Senate also means is that radical Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders are less likely to secure posts in the Biden cabinet. Warren has been calling on Biden to not wait for Congressional action on the liberal agenda, which includes forgiving millions of dollars of student loan debt.

In Warren’s case, Politico suggests she hasn’t got a chance of getting a cabinet post—she wants to be Treasury secretary—because Republicans in the Senate, if they retain control, would never confirm her. Also, Massachusetts has a Republican governor in Charlie Baker, and he could possibly appoint a fellow Republican to fill a Warren vacancy, the news organ said.

Gun control will go nowhere with McConnell and Republicans in charge of the Senate. It all hinges on the January special elections in Georgia, and between now and then, expect fortunes to be spent by both parties to capture those Senate seats. A thin majority is better than no majority at all, and McConnell would undoubtedly be willing to settle for that because the party in control sets the agenda and names committee chairs, a political reality that seems to escape people who think a president can unilaterally enact or repeal a law they don’t like.

One other thing is not lost on either party. Democrats may only have two years to push the radical Biden-Harris-Pelosi agenda, because in 2022, if history is any indicator, Republicans could take back the U.S. House and reinforce a Senate majority, and effectively neuter Biden.
