Democratic lawmakers Rep. Dan Goldman of New York and Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota have been accused of actively helping illegal immigrants avoid deportation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Goldman, through videos posted on his official House X account, has advised Chinese and Spanish-speaking migrants on how to resist deportation, while Omar has hosted seminars instructing Somali immigrants on evading ICE. These actions undermine federal immigration laws and raise serious questions about the role of elected officials in facilitating illegal activity.
Goldman’s controversial guidance
Rep. Dan Goldman, a vocal critic of President Trump, has come under fire for posting a video with Chinese and Spanish subtitles urging illegal immigrants to resist deportation. In the video, Goldman claims that migrants have a “right” to refuse cooperation with ICE and encourages them to contact his office if facing deportation.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
“Every New Yorker has rights when they interact with immigration enforcement,” Goldman stated, adding, “No matter what the next four years bring, stay informed, stay safe, and stay together.”
Goldman’s message has been interpreted as a direct challenge to federal immigration enforcement efforts. His advice not only misrepresents the legal obligations of undocumented immigrants but also emboldens them to flout the law.
Omar’s seminars on evading ICE
Meanwhile, Rep. Ilhan Omar has faced similar criticism for hosting seminars aimed at helping Somali immigrants avoid deportation. In a now-viral video, Omar is seen advising Somalis that they are “not obligated” to answer questions from ICE officers. “Just state that you are advised by a lawyer not to answer questions,” Omar said. “Disclosure of your name, immigration status, and the mode of entry is not mandatory.”
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and X, blasted Omar on social media, accusing her of “breaking the law. Literally. Outright.”
Omar defended her actions, claiming that she was merely informing immigrants of their legal rights. “Every single person in this country deserves to know their rights. That’s legal,” she responded.
However, critics argue that her advice goes beyond informing and actively encourages non-compliance with federal authorities.
A growing backlash
The actions of Goldman and Omar have sparked a fierce backlash, with many questioning the ethics of elected officials aiding individuals who are in the country illegally. Rep. Brandon Gill went so far as to suggest that Omar herself should be deported, stating, “America would be a better place if @IlhanMN were deported back to Somalia.”
The controversy comes amid a surge in deportations under the Trump administration, which has deported nearly 6,000 illegal immigrants in the first 15 days of its second term. ICE has prioritized individuals with criminal convictions or pending charges, including those tied to violent gangs and cartels.
The actions of Reps. Goldman and Omar highlight a growing divide in how lawmakers approach immigration enforcement. While they argue they are protecting the rights of vulnerable communities, critics contend that their efforts undermine the rule of law and encourage illegal behavior.
As the debate over immigration policy intensifies, the role of elected officials in shaping public perception and compliance with federal laws remains a contentious issue. It’s hard to believe we’ve reached a point in America where lawmakers are actively encouraging people to break the law.
