Cuomo’s Plan to Stop Gun Violence: Treat It Like Health Emergency

On Tuesday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo issued an Executive Order saying that Gun Violence is “public health emergency.” Cuomo’s plan? Who will he target? After declaring a “gun violence health emergency” on Tuesday, his critics are claiming it’s just another power grab. (Fox news)

Just like we did with COVID, New York is going to lead the nation once again with a comprehensive approach to combating and preventing gun violence, and our first step is acknowledging the problem with a first-in-the-nation disaster emergency on gun violence

Andrew Cuomo

Cuomo’s plan for Covid killed a whale of a lot of people unnecessarily. Here’s how Cuomo and his cohorts have handled “gun violence” to date: releasing violent offenders from prison, removing the bail requirement, and defunding the NYPD. He’s demanded more rigid gun laws (like that’s done any good whatsoever. NY already has some of the most rigid gun laws in the nation).

Is this executive order a quest for raw power? Some on both sides of the aisle think so.

Critics are having a field day with Cuomo’s plan:

For Cuomo, this isn’t about fixing gun violence. It’s about continuing his executive powers through a state of emergencies so he can continue to play savior on TV while monitoring his poll no’s incessantly,

NY State Assemblyman Ron Kim (D)

“Translation: I want to use gun violence to play hero again on my brother’s CNN show and earn another $5.1 million on a book deal while not doing anything to end the cycle of violence.”

NY State Assemblyman Ron Kim

Then there were the Republicans who have criticized him in the past, like Marc Molinaro.

Andrew Cuomo and the Democrats in Albany have spent the past 4 years dismantling our criminal justice system, undermining public safety, and even threatening the well-being of alleged assailants. To now blame the increase in violence on anyone but themselves is absurd and dishonest.”

Marc Molinaro

New York recorded 1,531 shootings in 2020, which is nearly double that of 2019 (97% increase), along with 462 murders (47% increase). So far this year there have been 718, a 42% increase. New York City also has a gang problem, but apparently that’s only interesting if you jam the statistics in with the other shooting stats and ignore the root of the issue. Stripping the NYPD of millions of dollars wasn’t overly bright either. But Cuomo’s plan includes some stretched out of proportion statics that said, “More people are dying of gun violence than COVID.”

So we ask again: is this another quest for power? Looks like it, so we’ll see who Cuomo’s plan targets in this new “emergency declaration on gun violence.”
