China isn’t exactly renowned for their free and open elections, nor their sense of biting sarcasm. Yet in recent elections for representatives to their local People’s Congresses, the number of ballots case for someone (or something) other than the standard party apparatchiks has caught the attention of the Western press.

As noted by the Wall Street Journal’s Beijing-based reporter Te-Ping Chen, non-government sanctioned “independent” candidates as well as protest votes have thrown quite the embarrassing wrench into the workings of the Communist Party of China.

The list of those entities voted for range from the whimsical to a down right middle finger shoved in the collective faces of the Party Bosses;

  • Donald Trump
  • Japanese porn star Sola Aoi
  • Former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin
  • Braised Chicken
  • Hillary Clinton
  • The Calabash Babies, a reference to a popular 1980s cartoon.

Also cited was that Chinese voters have in the past cast their ballots for “the Monkey King, or Zhu Bajie,” two mythological figures from the Chinese novel “Journey to the West.”

As the WSJ reporter also published;

“Hillary and Trump are famous in China–we know all about them,” said a student at Shanghai’s East China University of Political Science and Law. “We know more about them than we do about our candidates.”

“I don’t understand who our candidates are,” the student said. “But I really like Jiang Zemin. Voting this way is a way of taking my vote seriously.”

However, there are some in the People’s Republic who consider the less-than serious votes to have a degree of merit, especially in a Communist controlled government;

“If your vote doesn’t have any meaning, then why not just pick something that’s funny, or just pick in a satirical fashion?” said Li Fan, director of research center The World and China Institute.
