A lot of concern has been generated after China deployed 6 warships to the Middle East. They claim it was because of naval exercises with Oman, not worry over a widening of the war between Hamas and Israel. That narrative may or may not be accurate, depending on whom you believe.
The 44th naval escort task force – from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theatre – has been involved in routine operations in the region and spent several days in Oman last week.
The Chinese warships left Muscat for an unspecified location on Saturday after participating in an exercise with the Omani navy.
The task force includes the Zibo, a guided missile destroyer, the frigate Jingzhou, and the supply ship Qiandaohu – all of which will be stationed in the Middle East as Israel prepares for a ground invasion of Gaza…
According to China’s state broadcaster CCTV, Xi said: “The top priority now is a ceasefire as soon as possible, to avoid the conflict from expanding or even spiraling out of control and causing a serious humanitarian crisis.” MSN
Oman is a tiny country situated on the southeastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula. The RNO, or Royal Navy of Oman is small, and contains approximately 22 vessels, although the process of modernization is in process. The US Pentagon is involved in helping to update the nation’s vessels. The US receives approximately 9.2% of Oman’s oil, while China only receives about 5.5% (Oman is not a member of OPEC as of this report).
The Global Times, a Chinese state media outlet, seemed upset that media sources around the world were concerned about the deployment. They assured the world that it was all routine and normal, a continuation of “escort” missions in the region. Except that they support Hamas, not Israel.
It is a routine practice to send three military ships at one time to the region for escort missions, so six ships will be present simultaneously in the region during a handover, Chinese military experts explained, noting that this has nothing to do with the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.
The PLA Navy’s escort missions in the region also allow China to react quickly to any emergencies that could arise, for example, the evacuation of Chinese nationals in Sudan earlier this year, said experts. They opined that those military ships may get involved in evacuation tasks if any situation emerges…
Ding Long, a professor at the Middle East Studies Institute of Shanghai International Studies University, told the Global Times that unlike the US, China will never opt for military interference when it comes to solving international disputes. “At first, those foreign media and Western politicians accused China of not condemning Hamas, now they are distorting China’s routine military operations in the region. These are all tactics they use to embroil China deeper into the conflict and smear Beijing’s role in negotiations on the crisis,” said Ding…” Chinese State media Global Times
“China will never opt for military interference in resolving international disputes.” Sure. If you believe that, we have a property on Saturn to sell you.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
