Bumbling Biden Met Xi Jinping in Person – How’d That Go?

When Biden meets any world leader, we always worry that he’ll say something stupid that will cause problems. When Biden met Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 in Bali, Indonesia on Monday, that worry was primarily over Taiwan. But there were other issues that were left unfinished in the meeting that should have been brought up from a position of strength. [Of course, we don’t have that right now.]

‘Joe Biden has been wrong on every major foreign policy decision for decades.’ Robert Gates, former Defense Secretary

Many things were reportedly discussed when Biden met Xi during the 3 1/2 hour meeting, but some of them were not priorities. Joe’s priority appears to have been to not make waves. No mention was made of the Covid pandemic that came from the Wuhan lab, nor was any mention made of the Chinese-sourced Fentanyl flooding across our borders.

Taiwan:

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

“On Taiwan, he laid out in detail that our one China policy has not changed, the United States opposes any unilateral changes to the status quo by either side, and the world has an interest in the maintenance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. He raised U.S. objections to the PRC’s coercive and increasingly aggressive actions toward Taiwan, which undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and in the broader region, and jeopardize global prosperity.” WH readout of Biden meeting with Xi Jinping.

Human Rights violations and relationship

Absent a topic agenda or any specifics, multiple reports in American media outlets have quoted anonymous Biden administration officials who said the objective of meeting with Xi was to “build a floor,” meaning agreeing on a point beyond which neither side would allow the relationship to deteriorate, presumably including war.

“They did not expect any of the major differences with China to be resolved by the time the meeting breaks up Monday night. But they do hope by talking directly, the risk of a misunderstanding spiraling out of control is avoided,” the left-wing outlet CNN reported, referring to anonymous alleged American officials.

The White House readout published later on Monday claimed that Biden mentioned the Uyghur genocide, but did not dwell on the matter.  Breitbart

Competition

“President Biden explained that the United States will continue to compete vigorously with the PRC, including by investing in sources of strength at home and aligning efforts with allies and partners around the world. He reiterated that this competition should not veer into conflict and underscored that the United States and China must manage the competition responsibly and maintain open lines of communication.”  WH Readout

So Biden met with Xi Jinping and talked about, no, around the problems. Biden’s lack of personal strength to deal with foreign policy matters is telling. Remember that when Putin and Biden met, Putin ‘sized him up’ carefully and then invaded Ukraine. Biden told reporters that he didn’t believe China would invade Taiwan. Funny, he said the same thing just before Russia  invaded Ukraine. The hazards of having Bumbling Biden meeting with the Chinese dictator and getting it wrong are high.

Secretary of State Blinken plans to travel to China as a followup to the meeting in Bali.
