Biden Administration USDA Steals Milk Out of the Mouths of Children

Under the guise of “science” the Biden Administration’s USDA has proposed a cut to the amount of dairy products available to WIC participants. WIC stands for Women, Infants, and Children, a government program that provides grants to states in order to provide dairy products to low-income families. At this time of high inflation, the USDA proposed to cut the amount of milk and cheese by 25%.

“It’s stunning to us that they would do this. We’ve not had a good, clear reason as to why they would cut a WIC mom and her children up to three gallons per month of milk. It just takes your breath away that they would do this… at this time, where we are this abrupt change. We don’t have a clear explanation.”

“This is bad for nutrition. It’s bad for WIC mothers. There are about 6 million WIC moms and children. About 43% of all infants in the U.S. are on WIC. This type of abrupt change will mean probably 20% will drop out of the program.”

“A third say they’re going to have to find additional income to buy milk, cheese, yogurt, dairy products.” Michael Dykes, CEO of the International Dairy Foods Association to Fox.

Let’s think about this: few people in the US get the recommended daily amount of dairy now.  The calcium in dairy products is essential nutrition for the development of bones, prevention of osteoporosis, etc.

  • Higher consumption of calcium and dairy foods have been linked to better bone health and increased consumption of adequate nutrients. Healthy eating styles, which include low-fat and fat-free dairy foods, are linked to reduced risk of certain chronic diseases, including reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes. The WIC program has been around since 1972. Prior to that, the government provided just cheese and butter to low-income families. The WIC program has provided good nutrition for pregnant women, babies, and young children since the inception of the program. Cutting the ration of dairy products is ridiculous.

Lawmakers Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and Josh Harder (D-CA) wrote a letter along with others to the USDA:

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

“We are greatly concerned that reducing dairy in WIC food packages will negatively impact the nutritional intakes and health of program participants, as it will decrease their access to dairy’s nutrients at life stages key for health and development.” Lawmaker letter

The backlash from this plan is strong – we can only hope they’ll go with real science and protect the nutrition of WIC participants.
