Someone sent a package with an unknown white powder to Arizona GOP Senate President Karen Fann on May 19. Arizona DPS obtained the package from the Hazardous Materials Response Unit and submitted it to the crime lab for investigation. Officials say it was “out of the abundance of caution, as field tests on the substance taken at the scene came back “negative.”

Arizona GOP Fann’s assistant opened the package at around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, noted the white powder, and contacted authorities. Karen Fann is the Arizona official that authorized the Maricopa County audit.
Neither party provided more information on what substances or compounds the mystery powder was being tested for, and if they found out what the powder actually was. Newsweek
Since September 2001, white powder has been used to threaten people, even when some of it was found to be harmless. Anthrax was sent to several public officials immediately after 9-11, and in 2019, a man was sentenced to 5 years of probation after admitting sending white powder to Trump and administration officials.
This Arizona GOP incident comes in the midst of the Maricopa County Audit, which has contained numerous controversial issues such as deletion then recovery of the election database. Arizona’s Secretary of State, a Democrat, accused the audit company of making serious errors in the chain of custody of the machines, and stated that the current crop of Dominion voting machines is “Not suitable for use in another election.” Arizona will have to get new machines, she said. Both sides have traded accusations, with the Election board calling the audit a “sham” on Monday. The Secretary of State, Katie Hobbs, has opposed the audit since the beginning, but condemned the white powder incident.
