Was FEMA Assistance Redirected Away from Where it was Needed

A photo on X of FEMA supplies that allegedly were left in locations away from where they were intended was “community fact checked” as false due to the article being on a “satire” site. One problem: FEMA has a history of stealing necessities during disasters. It may be satire, but FEMA assistance has serious issues and has been known for corruption for years. President Trump has suggested getting rid of FEMA entirely – a great idea. That money could be used by the states to take care of disaster relief. But for now, the President has only vowed to reform the agency.

Let’s look back on some of FEMA’s well-known corruption:

The FBI arrested one of the top administrators of FEMA and the CEO of a contractor on wire fraud and bribery charges, along with a lower-level FEMA official today for fraud and bribery involving Hurricane Maria relief. The contractor got a $1.8 billion contract for rebuilding Puerto Rico’s notoriously unreliable electrical infrastructure, which the Department of Justice says came by way of bribery. Hot Air 2019

CFL wrote back in 2019 after this writer interviewed several folks who discovered the disaster relief had been diverted or simply left to go bad:

FEMA officials and the contractor were just part of the problem. Was there more corruption? Likely, as we reported from people on the ground that shipments of supplies were being taken and rerouted away from needed destinations.

Lack of distribution of medical and other supplies, water left to go bad in the hot sun, stranded residents, poor PR government coordination with NGOs, all of these things worked together with actual corruption to make Puerto Rico a living hell after Hurricane Maria.

Fast forward to 2024 when FEMA officials were ordered by their leader to ignore homes with Trump signs after Hurricane Helene.  FEMA assistance was virtually shut down for Hurricane victims unless they were Democrats.

“Reform” may not catch the full depths of corruption within FEMA assistance. While we acknowledge there are likely many within the agency who love Americans and genuinely want to assist them, there is another level that hate Trump and Republicans so bad that fixing their attitudes is a lost cause. Whether the X post is satire or not it’s a picture of how bad the Feds in charge of your communities during disasters is…a disaster all by itself.
