WaPo Blames Conservatives for Uproar over Linda Sarsour’s ‘Jihad’ Speech

Linda Sarsour, a prominent Women’s March leader with ties to Hamas, called on Muslims in America to engage in a jihad, or holy war, against President Donald Trump, but as far as the Washington Post (WaPo) is concerned, it’s essentially the conservatives who are at fault.

Sarsour said the Muslim resistance to Trump was a form of jihad and that Muslims shouldn’t assimilate, something the WaPo ignored.

Twitchy reported:

“Conservative wrath.” Because it’s conservatives’ fault that Sarsour, a well-known defender of sharia law and terrorist apologist, specifically referred to “jihad” in her speech. How dare conservatives’ associate jihad with violence?! The nerve!

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Would it kill the mainstream media to acknowledge Sarsour’s history for once? Would it kill them to concede that someone who regularly defends radical Islam might not have innocent intentions when she mentions jihad? And would it kill them to not twist themselves into knots to paint conservatives as the bad guys?

To make matters more absurd, the liberal website HuffPo — formerly known as the Huffington Post — decided to chime in and said, “Linda Sarsour is being taken out of context by opportunistic right-wing critics.” The line of utmost importance here is: “A word of truth in front of a tyrant ruler or leader, that is the best form of jihad.”

“In what way is this controversial? Sarsour is using Islamic theology to argue for the spiritual value of freedom of speech in the cultivation of civic consciousness. This reverence for speaking truth to power should make any liberal, classical or otherwise, more than pleased. And yet, to the crowd who eternally claim that Muslim-Americans reject ‘liberal values’, Sarsour’s remarks are being interpreted, ironically, as violence.”

Joe Newby of the Conservative Firing Line reported on her speech and presented the full video, which can be seen here:

“Why sisters and brothers, why are we so unprepared. Why are we so afraid of this administration and the potential chaos that they will ensue on our community?” she asked in her 22-minute speech.

“I hope, that when we stand up to those who oppress our communities, that Allah accepts from us that as a form of jihad,” she said in a particularly disturbing part of her speech.

“We are struggling against tyrants and rulers not only abroad … but here in the United States of America where you have fascists and white supremacists and Islamophobes reining in the White House,” she added, referring to the current president.

“When I wake up in the morning, and I remember who is sitting in the White House, I am outraged,” Sarsour said. “This is not normal, sisters and brothers. Those people sitting in the most powerful seats in this country, is not normal.”

Writing at Jihad Watch, Robert Spencer noted:

She is working from the myth that Muslims in Trump’s America are facing widespread and systemic persecution and harassment, and that much worse (a Muslim registry! Internment camps!) is looming. This is, of course, nonsense, but it is dangerous and incendiary nonsense, fueling a sense of grievance that will lead to more jihad terror attacks in the United States.

“Spencer is correct, as there is no Muslim ban, only a temporary pause on travel from a few countries that are known hotbeds of terrorism,” Newby said. “But that hasn’t stopped propagandists from spreading the false claim.”

In addition to playing the victim card for using a highly-charged word like jihad at a Muslim convention, Sarsour accused critics of racism and falsely claimed she was being criminalized, the Post said.

“I should be able to speak to my own community, my own faith community, use my scripture and … not be criminalized for being a Muslim in America,” she said. “I’m not going to limit who I am and how I speak because people are ignorant and racist.”

So, according to this logic, if you don’t like the idea of Islamic jihad being waged against President Trump by people who refuse to assimilate into Western culture, you’re not only ignorant, but racist.

Got it.  Because, as Noah Rothman points out, the story isn’t the story — conservative reaction to the story is the real story:

One can’t help but think she and her followers could behead people on live television and the liberal media would call critics “opportunistic,” ignorant and racist.
