US Military is Weak, May Not be Able to Handle Another Simultaneous War

In October, the Heritage Foundation issued  a warning that the US Military is “weak” for the very first time in the nine year history of the Military index. The only branch of the US Military that was rated “strong” was the Marine Corps. Now, at least one military official is sounding the same alarm. (The Washington Examiner)

“It is rated as weak relative to the force needed to defend national interests on a global stage against actual challenges in the world as it is rather than as we wish it were. This is the logical consequence of years of sustained use, underfunding, poorly defined priorities, wildly shifting security policies, exceedingly poor discipline in program execution, and a profound lack of seriousness across the national security establishment even as threats to U.S. interests have surged.”  The Heritage Foundation 2023 Index of U.S. Military Strength.

Even Military officials are warning that should a simultaneous conflict occur, the United States would struggle to prevail. Admiral Charles Richard went so far as to predict that the “big one is coming.”

“This Ukraine crisis that we’re in right now, this is just the warm-up. The big one is coming. And it isn’t going to be very long before we’re going to get tested in ways that we haven’t been tested [in] a long time…As I assess our level of deterrence against China, the ship is slowly sinking. It is sinking slowly, but it is sinking, as fundamentally they are putting capability in the field faster than we are. [It won’t] matter how good our commanders are or how good our horses are — we’re not going to have enough of them. And that is a very near-term problem.” Admiral Charles Richard, Commander of US Strategic Command in The Wall Street Journal

Why are we weak? Part of it is the blithering “woke” mentality shared by some Military leaders that has them focused on pronouns and “diversity” instead of winning wars. Part of it is the stupidity of the Biden administration with regard to funding for new ships, aircraft, and equipment while shoving billions/millions toward Ukraine…all of which makes readiness and maintenance a serious problem. Part of it is the lack of numbers – the US Army is 15,000 people short of their recruitment goals, and the USAF and Navy are in a similar boat.

Admiral Richard stated that unless the proper funding occurs, we are in serious trouble. The US has an advantage with submarines, but that will disappear as other nations continue to ramp up their production. Maintenance is a huge issue as well as the US falls behind in upkeep. The US nuclear arsenal is currently rated as “strong,” but trending toward “weak” as other countries ramp up their capabilities. Remember the Chinese hypersonic missile that caught US officials off guard last year? That was a wake up call that booted our Military in the hinder to hurry up.

Peace only lasts as long as a nation stays strong enough to preserve it. We’ve always thought of our Military as the best on the planet – and in many respects they still are. But the leaders in charge are rapidly causing serious downturns. The current political climate desperately needs to change.
