Update: Suspect Deceased in Kootenai County Ambush

2 Firefighters killed, 1 still fighting for his life

Sunday afternoon was beautiful in North Idaho – sunshine and warm temperatures drew residents and tourists alike to the lakes. But at about 1:20 p.m., a fire broke out on Canfield Mountain in Kootenai County, only a few blocks from the lake. Fire units from both Kootenai County and the City of Coeur d’Alene responded. But shortly thereafter, a frenzied radio message advised first responders that they were taking fire from the brush. But after a few hours the perpetrator who held first responders and local residents at bay was dead. The ambush was finally over.

The ambush

Two firefighters, one from Kootenai County Fire and EMS, as well as one from Coeur d’Alene were killed. One other firefighter was struck and sent to surgery (now listed as stable, but still in critical condition).

As 300 law enforcement officers from numerous agencies descended on the area, Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris told media that they were still taking fire and adamantly told residents to stay away. He also authorized his officers to shoot the suspect if they could get a clear shot. Helicopters with snipers were dispatched to the mountain.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Hours later, after checking the pings from cell towers in the Canfield region, Law Enforcement officers traced a signal to a spot near the fire. They found a man dead with the rifle he used still beneath him. It was unclear whether he killed himself or was shot by law enforcement. The man who committed the ambush would never do it again. In order to preserve what evidence they could, officers had to move the perp’s body because the fire was rapidly approaching. Today, officers will be checking for more weapons left by the suspect.

The fire is now contained, but the brush in North Idaho is extremely dry. It could have become enormous. North Idaho was saved from an inferno.

A long procession of fire trucks took the bodies of the two firefighters from Coeur d’Alene to Spokane, Washington, where a special medical examiner would determine what happened.

Anyone who would fire on an unarmed firefighter is unspeakably evil.  The suspect has been identified as Wess Roley. His motive is unknown. But an ambush like this is not normal for this area. Let’s hope it doesn’t become common.
