Any time that the world is forced to deal with a nuclear-armed lunatic, there is bound to be some tension.
Such is very obviously the case this week, as Russia’s stalled invasion of Ukraine has Vladimir Putin growing ever more erratic. The Russian “President” has threatened NATO and the west with his nuclear arsenal several times over the course of the last few weeks, and now the UN is warning that this might not be simple bluster.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that a possibility of nuclear conflict exists in the midst of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Guterres briefed journalists on the Ukraine situation Monday, where he described multilateral efforts to reach a diplomatic end for Russia’s attack on the country. During this presser, Guterres spoke to the recurring questions about how Vladimir Putin’s military steps against Ukraine could lead to the breakout of nuclear war.
His verbiage was chilling.
“Raising the alert level of Russian nuclear forces is a bone-chilling development,” Guterres said. “The prospect of nuclear conflict, once unthinkable, is now back within the realm of possibility.”
Weeks ahead of the invasion of Ukraine, a well-known Moscow mouthpiece was heard on state-run television that anyone looking to interfere with Russia’s plans for Ukraine would be turned into “radioactive dust”.
