Marine veteran Andy Tai Ngoc Huynh, 27, of Trinity and Army veteran Alexander Drueke, 39, of Tuscaloosa have not been heard from in days and are now considered missing, according to the Alabama Congressional delegation. The two US veterans had gone to Ukraine to help with the war. Although some outlets simply said they were “missing” they were likely captured by Russian Forces outside of Kharkiv, according to other media.
Two US veterans captured:
The Americans were captured after their 10-man squad ran into a much larger Russian force in a village outside Kharkiv, the newspaper said, citing an unnamed source who fought with the pair in a regular Ukrainian military unit.
“We were out on a mission and the whole thing went absolutely crazy, with bad intel,” the source said. “We were told the town was clear when it turned out the Russians were already assaulting it.
“They came down the road with two T72 tanks and multiple BMP3s (armored personnel carriers) and about 100 infantry,” the source added.
Drueke and Huynh apparently got at least one shot off at a Russian vehicle, destroying it with a rocket-propelled grenade before their capture.
Military Times reported that “Task Force Baguette, a group of former U.S. and French servicemen, said that two Americans fighting with them were captured a week ago. The group said Ukrainian intelligence confirmed the information.”

US State Department authorities are monitoring the situation. John Kirby, US Security spokesman at the White House reiterated that Americans should not go to Ukraine. (Early in the war Ukraine created a legion for foreign fighters.)
“Ukraine is not the place for Americans to be traveling. If you feel passionate about supporting Ukraine, there’s any number of ways to do that that that are safer and just as effective.”

Andy Tai Ngoc Huynh is the son of Vietnamese immigrants and served in the US Marine Corps for 4 years, though he did not see active combat. Alexander Drueke served in Iraq as a top gunner in convoy escorts, but struggled with PTSD when he returned. The families of the two US veterans are in touch with each other, and are extemely worried.
