The Tehran assassination of Ismail Haniyeh soon followed Israel’s targeting of Beirut on Tuesday which took out the “mastermind” of the attack on the Golan Heights that killed 12 young children. Fuad Shukr was also thought to be responsible for the attack on the Marine Barracks in 1983 which killed 243 US service members and many others.
On Wednesday morning, what is being described as a “mysterious” Tehran assassination took out Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas. Israel has a moral responsibility to respond to the deaths of children, but they have not responded to accusations that they did it. Will it lead to all-out war in the Middle East?
Beirut, Lebanon July 30, 2024
The Israeli strike against Shukr in Beirut was risky. Hezbollah is said to have around 200,000 Iranian munitions, plus around 40,000 combatants. Will a wider Middle East War be on the horizon?
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
“Hezbollah has 200,000 rockets, missiles and drones pointed at Israel, ready to inflict a massive amount of destruction on Tehran’s orders – perhaps at a time when Israel finally takes out Iran’s nuclear program. No democracy can live with that kind of threat on its border.” Richard Goldberg, Senior Advisor for the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies
The US denied participation in the assassination inside Iran, and Israel hasn’t spoken about it. The Iranians are not happy.
“The U.S. has denied involvement in Haniyeh’s assassination, and Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attack.
Hamas’s military wing said in a statement that the political leader’s death would “take the battle to new dimensions and have major repercussions.”
Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said it was Iran’s “duty” to take revenge.” Washington Examiner
The situation seems on the surface to be uniting some of Iran’s proxies.
Hussein al-Sheikh, a high-ranking official in the Palestinian Authority who has criticized Hamas in the past –and is widely seen as a pragmatic figure – condemned the assassination of Haniyeh, calling it “a cowardly act.”
Houthi terrorists in Yemen also responded, calling Haniyeh’s elimination a “terrorist crime and a flagrant violation of the laws.” …
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, which only meets in rare circumstances, convened on Wednesday morning at the Supreme Leader’s residence, two Iranian officials told NYT.
They added that Esmail Qaani, commander of the Quds Force, which is responsible for the regime’s covert foreign operations and directs its regional network of militias and terror groups, was also in attendance.” All Israel News
After the emergency meeting, the Ayatollah Khamenei ordered a direct strike on Israel in response to the Tehran assassination. The US consolidated 12 warships in the Middle East over the Houthi strikes, while at the same time launching diplomatic efforts to prevent escalation. As the state of Israel and indeed the world holds their breath to see what happens next, we wonder: will all these actions be the spark that lights a huge war?
