Supremes Rule Against Student Loan Forgiveness. Hits Biden Administration Several Times in 2 Days

The Supreme Court has been on a roll smacking the Biden Administration lately. Not only did they rule against “Affirmative Action” yesterday, but today they struck down the Student Loan Forgiveness program that ultimately could have cost taxpayers between $400 Billion and as much as $1 Trillion. The decision was 6-3. The case was Biden v. Nebraska. But that wasn’t the only ruling today that sent liberals into total freak out.

“Last year, the Secretary of Education established the first comprehensive student loan forgiveness program, invoking the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act of 2003 (HEROES Act) for authority to do so…

The Secretary’s plan canceled roughly $430 billion of federal student loan balances, completely erasing the debts of 20 million borrowers and lowering the median amount owed by the other 23 million from $29,400 to $13,600.  … Six States sued, arguing that the HEROES Act does not authorize the loan cancellation plan. We agree.”  The Epoch Times

The HEROES Act was created after 9-11 to aid the military members who had student loans after the devastating Twin Towers attacks. It paused their loans for a period of time so that they could go to war and not have to worry about the repayment. It was not designed to grant debt relief to millions. The Supreme Court agreed in their majority opinion.

Christian Workers: Groff v. Dejoy – a unanimous ruling

In a rare unanimous ruling, the Supreme Court said that a Christian postal worker who believes that Sunday should be a day of worship and rest is not creating an “undue hardship” on his employer by accommodating his religion. The court reiterated that undue hardship is a much more serious situation than the ordinary cost of overtime for employees. Their ruling was a win for Christian workers who increasingly face hostility from LGBTQ advocates in the workplace. The decision also protects adherents of other religions.

Ruling in favor of an artist who refused to make items that violate her religious beliefs:  303 Creative LLC v Elenis

The First Amendment came into direct conflict with the state of Colorado when Lorie Smith, a graphic artist, refused to create a website for an LGBTQ couple’s wedding. A lower court ordered her to comply. So she sued. She stated that it was never about not providing her service to LGBTQ people, but the message that she was being forced to send regarding same-sex marriage.  Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote the majority opinion.

…In this case, Colorado seeks to force an individual to speak in ways that align with its views but defy her conscience about a matter of major significance. But, as this Court has long held, the opportunity to think for ourselves and to express those thoughts freely is among our most cherished liberties and part of what keeps our Republic strong. But tolerance, not coercion, is our Nation’s answer. The First Amendment envisions the United States as a rich and complex place where all persons are free to think and speak as they wish, not as the government demands. Because Colorado seeks to deny that promise, the judgment is reversed.” Justice Neil Gorsuch

The dissenting opinions of the liberals on the court seemed to go against the First Amendment, as they claimed the majority ruling would bring more discrimination against LGBTQ people. Justice Gorsuch delivered an excellent response.

” …a commitment to speech for only some messages and some persons is no commitment at all. By approving a government’s effort to ‘eliminate’ disfavored ‘ideas,’ today’s dissent is emblematic of an unfortunate tendency by some to defend First Amendment values only when they find the speaker’s message sympathetic…But ‘if liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.'” Justice Gorsuch
