With more than four months remaining in 2021, Chicago’s criminal element is continuing to rack up the homicides with this past weekend’s tally of “at least” seven dead and more than 40 others wounded in 29 shootings.
The popular website ‘Heyjackass.com’ says the weekend mayhem brought the number of Windy City murders so far this month to 71 shot-and-killed among 72 slayings for the month. Another 321 people have been shot and wounded, the website reported Monday, and so far this year, 512 of the city’s 538 known murders involved firearms.
Fox News is reporting that weekend shooting victims ranged in age from 14 to 68 years old.
Almost one month ago, the Chicago Sun-Times reported on the essential failure of Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s “ambitious plan to narrow” the city’s “safety gap.” It’s been almost a year since the plan was announced and according to the newspaper, violence involving firearms “is up in at least nine of the areas.”

The Sun-Times identified those neighborhoods at the time as “West Pullman…up 566% from this time two years ago, North Lawndale 201%, South Lawndale 160%, Chatham 116%. Only three of the areas targeted by City Hall are down from 2019: West Englewood, Roseland and Humboldt Park.”
During the preceding weekend, HeyJackass noted, 52 people were shot, including five who were killed.
Since that story was published July 25, Chicago Police Officer Ella French was gunned down during a traffic stop, underscoring the contention that no traffic stop is “routine.” Three suspects have been arrested in that slaying.
Back in late July, Lightfoot was quoted by Newsweek insisting the city can’t arrest its way out of the violence.
Long story short: officials seem clueless about how to stop the violence, which threatens to surpass last year’s murder total of 792 murders, including the 719 who died by gunfire.
Last year, according to HeyJackass.com, someone was shot in Chicago every two hours and six minutes. Someone was murdered every 11 hours and six minutes. So far this year, someone is shot every 94 minutes, and someone is murdered nearly every 10 ½ hours.
The website also says the overwhelming majority (83.3%) of the victims are black while 12.7 percent are Hispanic and only 4 percent are white. The race of the assailants is almost entirely unknown. Only one of the deadly shootings so far is listed as “self-defense” by the website, and four others were the result of police shootings.
