Sen. Tom Cotton: How was Aaron Bushnell Allowed to be on Active-Duty?

Aaron Bushnell committed suicide by self-immolation on Feb 26

After an Active-Duty US Airman lit himself on fire in front of the Israeli Embassy in DC and died, US Veteran Senator Tom Cotton wants to know how the Department of Defense missed his mental state and proclivity toward Hamas terrorists. Airman Aaron Bushnell was on Active-Duty since 2020. He died screaming, “Free Palestine.”

“My name is Aaron Bushnell, I am an active-duty member of the United States Air Force and I will no longer be complicit in genocide. I am about to engage in an extreme act of protest but compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers, it’s not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal.” Bushnell

Aaron Bushnell, 25, was a “cyber defense operations specialist with the 531st Intelligence Support Squadron at Joint Base San Antonio.” Which is another issue that has flagged Sen. Cotton: did he have access to anything that could damage national security? The Senator wrote a letter to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin seeking answers.

“You have made it a top priority to address ‘extremism’ amongst our total force, and this act of horrific violence — in support of a terrorist group — raises serious questions about how this individual was allowed to serve on active duty,” Cotton wrote to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Wednesday.

By March 7, Cotton wants the DOD to provide information on whether Bushnell exhibited any “extremist leanings,” as well as if the DOD’s anti-extremism training includes addressing support for Islamic militant groups like Hamas.

Cotton, a member of the Armed Services Committee, also wants to know if Bushnell displayed “any concerning behavior” before the incident, and if any actions were taken to address it. He’s also probing whether any other military members engaged in anti-Israeli actions, violating DOD policy on restricted political activities.” Fox

The US Military is supposed to be “apolitical” and not participate in restricted activities such as protests or rallies in support of (especially) terrorists. If Senator Cotton, who sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee, finds that there are others who espouse such egregious viewpoints, there could be serious problems for the country. Remember that a number of US Military Academy members espoused communism several years ago. This would be as bad. But given that the SecDef has been focused more on “white supremacists” instead of terrorists, it’s no wonder that Senator Cotton is concerned.

Meanwhile, the left celebrated his suicide, calling him a martyr and praising his death. Such actions could cause copycats, which is another mental issue altogether. The New York Post called the leftists who praised him “reckless” and endangered more young people to think suicide is a politically viable method of protest. It is not.  Speak out, yes, set yourself on fire, no. It has the potential to destroy more families.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Someone started a GoFundMe supposedly for the Bushnell family, but after just one donation of $50, it was taken down. No reason was given. The person who began the fund was listed as “Hoda AJ,” according to Newsweek.

Senator Cotton’s questions remain: how did the US Air Force allow a person with anti-American and anti-Israel sentiments to be in active-duty status. And how many others are also in that vein.

Aaron Bushnell’s suicide is a tragedy, especially for the family. But finding out the full extent of this problem is imperative in order for the military to protect the United States.
