A 33 year old male was arrested for using a sword to behead a young mother in San Carlos, California yesterday, September 8. Jose Landaeta Solano was arrested for the crime shortly after the incident after he returned to the area of the crime.

San Mateo County deputies were flagged down by witnesses who reported an assault in progress. When the deputies arrived, she was already dead, her head severed by a sharp instrument.. The gruesome nature of the crime left deputies and witnesses shocked. One witness told NBC that the couple moved into the neighborhood about 3 years ago.
“Anytime someone loses their life, it’s certainly a tragedy. As far as the shocking nature of it, I do know that the deputies that first arrived on scene were a little beset by the scene. We are providing them peer support. We are also providing support for the witnesses that were on scene as well because there were several civilian witnesses.” San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Investigators old NBC that Solano had a violent criminal past and a history of mental issues. Police are still searching for the weapon, which some described as a “Samurai sword.”

The victim had a restraining order against Solano that was filed back in April. She was mother for two children, ages 7 and 1. Police said they did not think the children witnessed the crime, as they were inside the house, although the children were calling for their mother when deputies arrived. We sincerely hope they didn’t see it. There was a history of police response to the home for domestic violence.
Please remember that the law doesn’t always protect a person- it generates paper that police can use to arrest someone, but as for actually protecting anyone, it does little. Domestic violence is a crime that often leaves children and other family members devastated.
