Russian Saber-Rattling or Real Nuclear Threat?

Recent rhetoric about Russia’s potential launch of a nuclear weapon into space has a lot of people on edge. Some are saying that it’s a severe nuclear threat that could destroy the country – that our national security is at a risk not seen before. But is it just saber-rattling, or is it a real nuclear threat?

It’s not just the nuke in space issue that has people unhinged: the ICCJ (International Court of Criminal Justice) issued a warrant for the arrest of Vladimir Putin last year. On top of it is the recent death of major Putin opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Many Russians had hoped Navalny would lead them to a democracy, but now he is dead.  Putin has a sordid history of removing his political rivals. Is he a loose cannon that the world needs to fear?

Keep in mind that also Russia recently revamped its constitution to include several Ukraine regions they feel belong to them: Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia. Trying to stop Russia from taking them could launch a real nuclear threat.

Not a loose cannon: a dangerous, coldly calculating foe.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Dmitry Medvedev is the chair of the Russian Security Council. He was once the Russian Prime Minister and President. As a mouthpiece (lightning rod) for Putin, his rhetoric is often wilder than Putin’s. But make no mistake, he says what Putin wants him to say. If he didn’t, he would disappear. Some of his previous statements:

“Medvedev’s remarks on nuclear war are only his latest wild threats against Western cities, which he makes with some frequency over developments in the Ukraine war. As previously reported, Medvedev has threatened nuclear strikes over an international arrest warrant on President Putin, to nuke “disgustingly damp… eternal enemy” Britain, and a “hot, full-scale World War III” over American interference in Ukraine. His latest remarks are particularly reminiscent of another Medvedev speech in July 2023 when he threatened nuclear war for NATO’s support to Ukraine.” Oliver JJ Lane at Breitbart

Is this a real nuclear threat? After news of a new Russian nuclear weapon in space was revealed, one GOP Representative demanded that the information be released to the public. How would that help? Between Covid fear-mongering and other government blunders like the open border, some might totally ignore it.

Recently, former Fox New host Tucker Carlson landed an interview with Putin, much to the chagrin of lazy leftist news media. The interview lasted over 2 hours and contained Putin’s view of the history of the region involving Ukraine (remember their new constitution). (As well as his claim that Ukraine needs to be “de-nazified.”) Keep in mind that Russian intelligence continually watch the news of Western nations – he even mentioned that incident in Canada where the Nazi soldier received as standing ovation. Yet he made no overt nuclear threat, even after Tucker attempted to pin him to it:

“Tucker Carlson: I’m definitely interested, but from the outside it seems like this could devolve or evolve into something that brings the entire world into conflict and could initiate a nuclear launch. And so, why don’t you just call Biden and say, let’s work this out?

Vladimir Putin (01:06:27):

What’s there to work out? It’s very simple. I repeat, we have contacts through various agencies. I will tell you what we are saying on this matter and what we are conveying to the US leadership. If you really want to stop fighting, you need to stop supplying weapons. It will be over within a few weeks. That’s it. And then we can agree on some terms. Before you do that, stop. What’s easier? Why would I call him? What should I talk to him about or beg him for what?” Excerpt from Transcript on Tucker Carlson’s interview with Vladimir Putin

Recent news that Russia is looking to deploy a nuclear weapon in space that would destroy satellites has some members of Congress extremely concerned. Some in the “intelligence community” say that the news is likely true, but there is “no cause to worry just yet.” Russia has been practicing such a scenario for years, even destroying their own satellites, so the concept is nothing new.

“…the device military officials have been briefed on is a sort of nuclear EMP designed to “destroy satellites by creating a massive energy wave when detonated, potentially crippling a vast swath of the commercial and government satellites that the world below depends on to talk on cellphones, pay bills, and surf the internet…

Nuclear weapons, by their nature, are not precise, meaning even a relatively controlled blast would take out anything in its immediate vicinity — so Russia couldn’t target American satellites without risking its own, many of which operate at a similar orbit.

The potential damage isn’t negligible: In Starfish Prime, a weapons test in 1962 during the Cold War, a 1.4 megaton nuclear warhead was detonated at about 250 miles altitude — low earth orbit, which is between 62 miles altitude to 1,250 miles. Eventually, that test took out about a third of the active satellites in orbit due to the blast, its debris, and the radiation left in its wake.” Katherine Tangalakis-Lippert at Business Insider

So…do we have a real nuclear threat? Or just an over-the-top Russian saber-rattling situation?  With Vladimir Putin, anything is possible. Mr. Medvedev’s rhetoric may very well be a harbinger of what could come.  But at this point, needless panic will simply cause more problems.
