‘Rose City’s’ image wilting as violent crime surges

UPDATED, 12/10 – Much like liberal Seattle 150 miles to the north, Portland, Oregon is in the throes of an alarming increase in violent crime, including homicides, with Fox News reporting the Rose City “saw a 190.9% increase in gun violence in November compared to the same month last year” based on data from the Portland Police Bureau.

This year has seen the city in turmoil with protests occurring almost on a nightly basis. There have been close to 600 shooting incidents with nearly 175 people injured so far this year, according to data on the police bureau’s website, and that may not be current. There have been at least 40 homicides in the city this year, according to a reporter at the Portland Oregonian.

Police information officer Melissa Newhard reported Wednesday the number is actually 48 slayings so far this year.

There is no small irony that Portland has seen demands from far left protesters to defund the police department. The Oregonian recently reported the city is on course to have the deadliest “spate of violence in at least six years,” and that was back on Oct. 2. As the year winds to its close, the situation has gotten no better, with an early Monday morning attack on a home that left it riddled with bullet holes. Amazingly, nobody was injured.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Fox News has also reported separately that Portland recently topped the list of major metropolitan areas with horrible auto theft statistics.

The city has become known for its far left political tilt, rivaling Seattle to the north and San Francisco several hundred miles to the south as a place least likely to welcome, much less tolerate, conservatives. By no small coincidence, homicides are also up this year in San Francisco, according to police department data. Their website reports 50 slayings for the year so far, when there were 36 during the same time period last year.

There may be no easy explanation for the uptick in violent crime, though some blame may go to the COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns and related stress, but that might be speculation.

What is clear is that the liberal agenda does not appear to be working, and heading into 2021 with Joe Biden planning to take over the White House in January, people living in these and other cities experiencing spikes in violent crime have cause to worry.
