Report: ATF Nominee Chipman deleted ‘thousands of tweets’

As if things weren’t going badly enough for David Chipman, the former federal agent-turned-gun control advocate nominated by Joe Biden to head the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, there is a new report in The Federalist that Chipman “has purged thousands of tweets from his Twitter profile, while still permitting communications on Facebook, raising flags over his prior hearing response that he made his account private due to “violent threats” that were forwarded to the Department of Justice.”

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) told The Federalist, “It’s deeply concerning that Chipman — the manifestation of Biden’s promise to come for our guns — would hide his past tweets. It adds to the numerous red flags about his record, his candor, and the culture of lack of transparency he would bring to the ATF.”

This comes as a new Reuters/Ipsos survey shows Biden’s gun control agenda is losing traction among voters in general, and a significant 11 percent among Democrats. According to Reuters, “the number of Americans who approved of Biden’s stance on gun violence dropped 8 points overall and 11 points among Democrats from April to June.” That revelation brought a reaction from the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

“There is no doubt our TV campaign, which continues into July, is a large factor in this decline because we’re telling Americans what the establishment media refuses to report about Biden’s gun control agenda,” Gottlieb said. “Between this week and next, we will be running our 60-second message at least 84 additional times, reaching millions of Americans who actually do cherish their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.”

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

CCRKBA has been running a 60-second message on several cable networks for the past several weeks. It has been getting a big response from people across the country who have either joined, or are contributing, to the grassroots gun rights organization.

“We’ve also been on the forefront in the growing opposition to confirmation of David Chipman, Biden’s choice to head the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives,” Gottlieb added. “We’ve demanded a full investigation into allegations Chipman made disparaging remarks about black colleagues who overwhelmingly passed an agency exam while he was assigned to the ATF office in Detroit. He allegedly said they must have been cheating. For the past few years, Chipman has been working for the gun prohibition lobby, and Biden’s nomination for him to head the nation’s gun law enforcement agency isn’t just insulting, it’s an outrage.”

According to The Federalist, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) was notified by Chipman that he had “decided to set my Twitter account to private because of violent threats I had received in the past and anticipated receiving once my nomination was made public. I notified officials at the Department of Justice that I intended to make my account private.”

But Cotton’s reported reaction was not sympathetic.

“David Chipman is a gun-grabbing lobbyist who is woefully unfit to lead the ATF, which is why he is trying to hide his record from the Senate,” Cotton reportedly said. “He refused to answer the Senate’s standard questions about his record as a lobbyist, and has hidden his public statements and tweets because his abysmal record leaves no doubt that he shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near a federal agency.”
