Putin and Kim Set to Meet to Discuss Weapons

Two sanctioned countries getting together is concerning to analysts

Putin and Kim are set to meet to discuss an arms deal while both are in attendance at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok Sept 10-13.  It is already suspected that North Korea has been sending rockets, artillery shells, and other ammunition to Russia for its war in Ukraine. This time, more may be at stake, since the West has a serious leadership vacuum.

Putin and Kim have mutual problems:  Russia needs more ammo and missiles, and North Korea wants more technology and food aid shipments, not to mention prestige from dealing with Russia.  Kim Jong-un has “vast stores” of shells and ammo, but analysts say most of those are copies of Soviet-era arms. There is a small route for rail traffic between Russia and North Korea, but it may not handle large amounts of transfers.

Then there’s the fact that Russia rarely gives technology to anyone, including China.

Kim will likely also trumpet expanding relations with Moscow as a sign that the country is overcoming its years of isolation. North Korean leaders have long valued face-to-face meetings with world leaders as signs of international importance and for domestic propaganda purposes.

Kim is likely also seeking Russian technology to support his plans to build high-tech weapons systems such as powerful long-range missiles, hypersonic ballistic weapons, nuclear-powered submarines and spy satellites, said Hong Min, an analyst at Seoul’s Korea Institute for National Unification.

It’s unclear whether Russia would be willing to provide North Korea with advanced technologies related to nuclear weapons and ICBMs, Cha said. Russia has always tightly guarded its most important weapons technologies, even from key partners like China, he said.  AP

For its part, the United States is concerned about the budding partnership between Russia and other sanctioned countries like North Korea and Iran. Such an “axis of evil” could become a dangerous leviathan for the rest of the world. Sergei Shoigu, Russia’s Defense head already met with Kim in July, and discussed the possibility of joint military exercises with the rogue nation. North Korea has not participated in such exercises since the Korean War.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

We urge the D.P.R.K. to cease its arms negotiations with Russia and abide by the public commitments that Pyongyang has made to not provide or sell arms to Russia.” National Security Council spokesperson

That request may be too late. They may have already passed the point of talking and moved into action. It’s a scenario which could cause serious problems, according to experts.

“For peace-loving nations, it’s a clarion call: Stand united or watch the pillars of global peace crumble. And for Putin, this dangerous dalliance might not only threaten global stability but also the very foundation of his dreams for Russia. It’s time for action.

The clock is ticking, and there’s no strong Western leadership dealing with the situation in a meaningful way, and that’s even more disturbing.” Brandon Webb at SOFREP
