Well, it was nice while it lasted I suppose. We had ourselves a good old-fashioned proxy war in eastern Europe, between the democracies and freedoms of the west and the totalitarian rule of Russia, China, and the new “axis of authoritarianism”.
But now, after 14 months of barbaric bloodshed, the truth has come to the light: There are western forces, NATO members and all, on the ground in Ukraine.
The UK is among a number of countries with military special forces operating inside Ukraine, according to one of dozens of documents leaked online.
It confirms what has been the subject of quiet speculation for over a year.
The leaked files, some marked “top secret”, paint a detailed picture of the war in Ukraine, including sensitive details of Ukraine’s preparations for a spring counter-offensive.
The US government says it is investigating the source of the leak.
And the US should have a vested interest: We have troops operating in-country ourselves.
According to the document, dated 23 March, the UK has the largest contingent of special forces in Ukraine (50), followed by fellow Nato states Latvia (17), France (15), the US (14) and the Netherlands (1).
There will no doubt be a massive and ornery response from Vladimir Putin in the coming days, as much of his belligerence of late has been aimed at keeping the western world out of his war.
