Harvard used to be the country’s premier University. It was founded in 1636 by the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and later named for John Harvard, a Puritan minister who donated his estate and 400 volume-library to the school. It is the oldest university in America. Lately, it’s one of the most controversial, thanks to the ‘woke’ President of Harvard. The university has allowed constant pro-Palestinian protests since October 7, and the Jewish students have become afraid to go to class. Now there is the possibility that the President of Harvard may have plagiarized portions of her final PhD dissertation.
First, background of the controversy of antisemitism on campus: Claudine Gay, President of Harvard
Gay is the first Black woman to be the President of Harvard. After her damning testimony at a recent hearing on antisemitism in Congress, there are calls for her to step down. While this writer fully agrees with those calls, her replacement would probably be no better – the school is as “woke” as it gets. (As are a plethora of “prestigious” colleges in the US. With very few exceptions, the takeover by Marxists on our campuses is complete).
During the hearing on Capitol Hill, Claudine Gay was asked 17 times if calling for the genocide of Jews violated Harvard’s policies. 17 times she skated around the issue by saying that whatever antisemitic rhetoric was used had to be placed “in context.” It was a yes or no question and she refused to answer it.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
The backlash was furious. She attempted to “apologize” for her statements:
“What I should have had the presence of mind to do in that moment was return to my guiding truth, which is that calls for violence against our Jewish community — threats to our Jewish students — have no place at Harvard and will never go unchallenged. Substantively, I failed to convey what is my truth.” Claudine Gay (Fox)
“Her truth” is not THE TRUTH, by the way. The attempted apology fell flat. Lawmakers called it “hollow” and demanded new leadership at the university. Meanwhile 500 of her colleagues demanded that she be left in place, saying that it was ok to allow her to have “her truth” because the university stands for “free speech.” The First Amendment on nearly every university campus has only been allowed for leftists for at least a decade now. Conservatives are shouted down, cancelled, and otherwise disrespected and even threatened.
Newest controversy: “plagiarism”
Christopher Rufo and Christopher Brunet wrote an article on the problems of the President of Harvard:
Harvard president Claudine Gay has problems. Touted as the first black woman to run the nation’s most prestigious university, she assumed leadership with high expectations, but her tenure, which began this summer, has been mired in scandal. As dean and then president, Gay has been accused of bullying colleagues, suppressing free speech, overseeing a racist admissions program, and, following the Hamas terror campaign against Israel, failing to stand up to rampant anti-Semitism on campus.
We have obtained exclusive documentation demonstrating that President Gay may face yet another problem: plagiarism of sections of her Ph.D. dissertation, which would violate Harvard’s own stated policies on academic integrity. Her dissertation was entitled: “Taking Charge: Black Electoral Success and the Redefinition of American Policies” and was published in 1997. According to Rufo and Brunet, various portions of it were taken nearly verbatim from the works of others, without proper credit being given. An investigation into her academic integrity should occur, regardless of 500 of her colleagues writing a letter of support. If she has violated the academic standards herself, the President of Harvard should be ousted or resign.
