On Friday, NBC reported that an 18 year old student carrying a shotgun was tackled to the ground by a former Oregon Ducks Football player and coach, Keanon Lowe. The coach also works security at the Portland High School (Parkrose). Hero, of that there is no doubt.

Police were called to Parkrose High School at 11:45 a.m.. They arrived to find Lowe already holding the suspect in the hallway. Keanon Lowe was a star wide receiver for the Oregon Ducks in days past, and now works as a football, track and field coach in addition to security. When Angel Granados Dias, 18, came into a classroom at Parkrose High School dressed in a black trench coat and pulled out a shotgun, students began running. Lowe sprang into action, wrestling the man to the ground, and holding him until police arrived.

“I think he deserves a lot of credit for his bravery. If it wasn’t for him, someone could have gotten hurt or potentially lost their life.” Elijah Reginald, student

“It was crazy seeing him. He was a wide receiver for the Ducks. I didn’t know he could tackle like that.” Sisi FuaPau, student

For Lowe’s part, local media praised him for the impact he’s had on his team in addition to his heroism, taking them from a winless season to getting to be in the playoffs. They had lost 23 games in a row. One of his former teammates joined him on staff, and mentioned that it wasn’t intimidating at all to have a losing team at first. They were just there to ‘make something happen.’

As a security guard at the school, students say that Lowe is always very calm. The students interviewed by Oregon Live stated that he listens and always treats everyone with respect.

Lowe himself, a Jesuit High School graduate, was low key about his actions on Friday.

“I’m just happy everyone was OK. I’m happy I was able to be there for the kids and for the community.” Keanon Lowe

The parents of students at the Portland High School are happy he was there as well. It sounds like he was a hero long before the incident on Friday.

The student with a gun was described as possibly planning suicide. Police have not released details of his motives.

“The staff member did an excellent job by all accounts, (and) our officers arrived within minutes and went right in.” Sgt. Brad Yakots, police spokesman
