The publisher of a newspaper in Roseburg told Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly in a live interview Monday that when President Barack Obama travels to the Northwest this Friday for a long-planned Seattle fundraiser, he might not be welcome when he detours to that southern Oregon community.
The concern is that he may simply want to exploit that community’s tragedy to push his gun control agenda.
Roseburg Beacon Publisher David Jaques put it bluntly, “I think the president, first of all, is not welcome in the community.” Jaques mentioned several local public officials who apparently share that opinion.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
“He wants to come to our community,” Jaques asserted, “and stand on the corpses of our loved ones and make some kind of political point.”
His remarks mirrored those of gun rights advocate Alan Gottlieb said in a press release regarding the president’s comments already in reaction to the shooting at Umpqua Community College. He speaks from experience as the co-author of a book titled “Dancing in Blood – Exposing the Gun Ban Lobby’s Playbook to Destroy Your Rights.” It details how the gun prohibition lobby exploits tragedy for political gain.
Gottlieb, chairman of the Bellevue-based Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, blasted the president in a press release for admitting he wants to “politicize” the UCC shooting.
“Students died and the president immediately wants to use their deaths for disingenuous and ineffective gun policies,” he bristled.“Obama never talks about all the gun-related murders in his home town of Chicago with all its impediments to lawful gun ownership.”
“Every time Obama attacks guns and gun owners in his attempts to pass new restrictive gun control laws,” Gottlieb said, “all he ends up doing is causing gun sales to increase. Unwittingly, Obama has been the best thing for gun sales during the past seven years.”
Obama is traveling to Seattle for a fundraiser for anti-gun U.S. Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA). That he would first head south to Roseburg is raising lots of hackles across conservative social media.
