On the eve of the election in Virginia, Democrat Del. Chris Hurst (12th District) was allegedly involved in some sort of campaign sign incident, and was reportedly pulled over by a sheriff’s deputy and cited for driving with a suspended license, Fox News is reporting.

According to WDBJ News, Hurst was stopped “after a Radford City Sheriff’s deputy saw a woman turning over and messing with campaign signs at the Radford Rec Center, an election polling precinct. The deputy then saw the woman get in a car. When the deputy did a traffic stop and requested assistance from a Radford Police officer, the driver of the car was identified as Hurst. The woman’s name has not been released.”

Hurst is formerly a journalist at WDBJ, whose fiancée, Alison Parker, was murdered during a live broadcast in 2015. He has been supported by gun control groups and Fox reported his campaign also received $15,000 from Democrat former Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s campaign.

Tensions were high going into the election, as it appeared Republicans would regain control of the State Assembly and possibly the governor’s mansion. A change of power in Richmond would also be seen as a referendum on Joe Biden, who has become unpopular among many Old Dominion voters despite Virginia’s transition essentially to a blue state” thanks to heavy Democrat voting in Loudon County.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Hurst’s challenger, Republican Jason Ballard, issued a statement quoted by the Roanoke Times: “I am deeply disappointed that Chris Hurst has decided to end his campaign in such a reckless way…His latest misstep is yet another reason why he doesn’t deserve another term as Delegate. I, on the other hand, will remain laser focused on the issues that matter most to the people of the 12th District. I will always strive to set a good and positive example for my children and the fine people of the New River Valley.”

The newspaper said the city “has referred the matter to the Virginia State Police.”
