Oldest Living Veteran Richard Overton Victim of Identity Theft
Thieves emptied the bank account of America’s oldest living veteran, Richard Overton by stealing his identity.
An unknown person(s) set up a bank account in Overton’s name, accessed his checking account by using his Social Security number, and drained it, buying savings bonds from Treasury Direct. The person has been doing it for several months. A friend of Overton’s filed a police report on the theft Friday.
Overton is 112, and is verified as the oldest living WWII veteran, and the oldest American. He spends many of his days sitting on his front porch, which he views as his stage, smoking cigars and having an occasional application of whiskey and cola. He served in the South Pacific during WWII, and moved to Austin, Texas in 1945. But this will be a serious setback.
“Someone set up a bogus account, got his Social Security number and accessed his personal checking account… This is going to be a setback for Richard. It was a significant amount of money.” Volma Overton, Richard’s third cousin
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
Fortunately, Richard’s personal bank account was not hooked up to the GoFundMe account set up for his in-home care, which has been set up in 2016. But his care has gone through a of those funds. His cousin worries that when the caregiving money is gone, Richard may go too.
