Fox News is reporting that New York City Mayor Eric Adams “agreed with former NYPD commissioner William Bratton that progressive politics played a role in the increase of crime in American cities on ABC’s ‘This Week’ Sunday.”
Former Police Commissioner William Bratton appeared in a video and remarked, “The scales right now are tipped very heavily in favor of the reforms of the progressive left. Well intended, some needed, but a bit too far. And what we have as a result is this growing fear of crime, this growing actual amount of crime, as evidenced in almost every major American city.”
According to a transcript of the program posted at ABC News, Adams replied, “Yes, I — I believe he is right. And he understood what we had to go through during the mid ’80s, early ’90s, when we had to transform policing. Major mistakes made throughout the years that destroyed the trust that the police commissioner is talking about. We have to rebuild that trust. But we can’t rebuild that trust by allowing those who are dangerous and that have — they have a repeated history of violence to continue to be on our streets. We have to unbottleneck the courts. Too many people during Covid, when courts closed down, have not served their time or have not been in the courtroom. And then we have to be honest about some of the things we’re doing generationally that has created the crime problem that we are facing right now. And that is why we believe in intervention and prevention to solve this issue that we’re facing.”
Crime is up across the landscape. Last month, Seattle’s KING5 News reported on businesses leaving the downtown area, and that one tech company that moved workers out of the downtown “won’t bring workers back to the office until they feel it’s safe, not because of COVID-19, but crime.”
As Liberty Park Press reported, the city’s attempts to reduce violent crime by adopting and supporting gun control measures has been a complete bust. Not only has gun-related violence increased in the six years since the city started collecting a sales tax on firearms and ammunition, the projected revenues have never been reached. The actual revenue figures are well below what was projected in mid-2015 when then Councilman Tim Burgess championed the tax with pie-in-the-sky revenue predictions.
New York’s subway shooting incident underscores the decline of public safety in The Big Apple, and it was to that incident which Bratton, and then Adams, were reacting.
Yet, what does the Joe Biden administration do to address this dilemma? Biden pushes more gun control. Conservative Firing Line addressed Biden’s new anti-gun push several days ago.
