Non-Citizen Kelly Wong Appointed by San Francisco to Elections Commission

Is there another motive?

Kelly Wong is the first non-citizen to be appointed to the San Francisco Election Commission, as we reported earlier today. She’s not eligible to vote in US elections. So why did San Francisco appoint her? Because the people of California removed the citizenship requirement for all commissions and advisory councils. But is there something else in the plans?

Kelly Wong is an activist, an advocate for immigrant rights. She is an immigrant from Hong Kong who came here in 2019 to pursue graduate studies. She wants to inspire other non-citizens as a member of the San Francisco Election Commission. But inspire them to what? She is not eligible to vote. And she is not an advocate for the United States. Is California planning to violate the US Constitution more than they already have?

California removed the citizenship requirement for commission members in 2020. They appear to believe that non-citizens will help cities work better for the large populations of immigrants. But Ms. Wong feels that it is important to educate the non-citizens in the voting process.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

“I’ve seen how language and cultural barriers prevent immigrants with limited English proficiency from fully exercising their right to vote,” Wong said. “Is there a way to do voter outreach that is not just about translation but can touch on political education while maintaining neutrality and impartiality in elections?”

…She mentioned her own struggles as a foreigner with navigating voting systems, allowing her to empathize with those she wants to help.

“Even though I’m fluent in English, I still encounter challenges in navigating a new system, let alone participating in political conversation and activities,” she said.

Wong commented how she discovered that “there isn’t an equivalent term for the word ‘reparations’ in Cantonese or Mandarin.” Fox

The “trend”

San Francisco is not an outlier in pointing toward non-citizens for important tasks. Denver is proposing an ordinance that removes restrictions on non-citizens who want to be police officers and firefighters (American Military News). It will be formally introduced as a bill in April, according to sponsors. The measure will have to be placed on the November ballot, since charter changes require passage by voters. Keep in mind that Denver is a “sanctuary city,” as is San Francisco.

Kelly Wong’s appointment to the San Fracisco Elections commission is just the tip of a deep iceberg. As more and more immigrants enter the US, and the problems arise from dealing with folks of other cultures that don’t speak English, it could get crazy out there. And the trend, or the motive for doing it is concerning.
