National Review: Busting the ‘Myth’ About Guns and Chicago Mayhem

memorial day weekend
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is trying to blame the violence in her city on lax gun laws in other states, an argument that National Review is calling a “myth.”

Writing at the National Review online this week, senior writer David Harsanyi may have committed blasphemy when he declared decades of Chicago politicians’ finger-pointing at guns being brought in from out-of-state, where there is “virtually no gun control” is a myth.

And as Harsanyi explained, it’s an almighty poor myth at that; easily exposed for the fraud it has become.

“For one thing,” he explains, in plain English even a Chicago politician should understand, “there is no state in the nation with ‘virtually no gun control’ or ‘no background checks.’ Every time anyone in the United States purchases a gun from a federal firearms licensee (FFL) — a gun store, a gun show, it doesn’t matter — the seller runs a background check on the buyer through the NICS (National Instant Criminal Background Check System) database.”

His observation was in response to something Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot—whom he describes as “tragically incompetent”—said over the weekend in an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union program.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

“We are being inundated with guns from states that have virtually no gun control, no background checks, no ban on assault weapons — that is hurting cities like Chicago,” Lightfoot declared.

This has become a favorite dodge among politicians who cannot bring themselves to acknowledge they can’t fix the crime problem because their own soft-on-criminals policies make life easy for recidivist thugs.

Just what is a “recidivist criminal?”

Take a quick look at a man identified as Brett E. Pruett, 58, who is now in a Portland, Oregon jail, charged in a triple homicide that occurred in that city. Published reports suggest Pruett is an interesting fellow, with 13 felony convictions, and apparently a warrant for his arrest in San Diego, Calif. He broke out of jail in California back in 1984, according to a FlashAlertNewsWire report.

He now faces 11 counts of first-degree murder with a firearm, two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm and one count of assault.

Pruett is a suspect in the deaths of Elmer Edwin Hughes III, Tashia Heather Cobb and Lawrence Wayne Murphy, according to the Portland Oregonian.

Back to Chicago, where Monday saw 22 people shot, two of them fatally. This followed a weekend during which, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, almost 60 people were shot, including three who died.

Lightfoot can assign blame wherever she wants, but there will always be a question about how many repeat offenders in Chicago are pulling the triggers of guns they have illegally? Nobody seems to ever provide that kind of information to the media.

According to Axios.com, at least 414 people had been murdered this year in the Windy City through July 19, and there have been killings since then. The Axios story said these killings are “putting the city on track to have one of its deadliest summers since 2016.”

President Donald Trump has stated he could deploy 75,000 federal agents to help cities “struggling with protests and violence,” but Lightfoot and other mayors—especially Seattle’s Jenny Durkan and Portland’s Ted Wheeler, both far left Democrats like Lightfoot—don’t want the help. They argue the addition of federal agents would only increase tension in their cities, but a more plausible explanation might be that none of these mayors wants their weak-handed policies exposed as failures, should federal cops bring genuine law and order to the urban anarchy that now presently appears to exist.
