Friday is “National Gun Violence Awareness Day,” but in cities including Chicago and New York, it’s probably not necessary to remind anyone as the body counts clearly demonstrate people are aware of the violence, and they’re also figuring out that gun control hasn’t worked.
According to WMAQ in Chicago, the local NBC affiliate, last month actually saw a slight decrease in the number of murders. The station said the Memorial Day weekend had a lower number of killings than any other Memorial Day weekend in the past decade.
However, Chicago has racked up more slayings so far this year than last, with 252 for the first five months of 2021, while the same period last year scored 240 homicides.
The New York Times reported seven murders in The Big Apple over the holiday weekend. The newspaper said “police department data shows murders up 23 percent through May 23, with 165 posted as opposed to 134 last year.”

The newspaper said homicides in Philadelphia “are up almost 28 percent, with 170 through May 9, compared with 133 in the same period last year.”
Likewise, homicides in Tucson, Arizona have jumped 76 percent this year over last, with 30 so far in 2021 while last year at this time there had been 17.
Then there is Portland, Oregon where 37 people have so far been murdered this year.
But it is Chicago where the body count is most alarming, so when the gun prohibition lobby asks people to wear orange all weekend, one might anticipate a lot of fluorescent orange garments to show up in marches and rallies, perhaps on the city’s South Side.
Wearing orange is something the gun control crowd has co-opted from hunters who wear it in the field so they are visible to other hunters.
This effort gets plenty of attention. A check on Google shows “about 286,000 results” by simply asking about National Gun Violence Awareness Day. One can find stories about mayors or city councils adopting proclamations about so-called “gun violence,” which is a term designed to demonize firearms, since one never reads about “knife violence” or “blunt instrument violence” when reporting violent or deadly crimes.
But what to do about this spike in violence?
Maybe the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has an answer. According to Fox News, the agency “recently increased its capacity to process permits for carrying a concealed weapon.” Sheriff Alex Villaneuva told Fox, “We’re recognizing that the threat to the residents is increasing, so we’re responding accordingly.”
Applicants must still provide a “good cause” and meet other criteria, but this is still a significant acknowledgement that armed citizens can defend themselves.
Up the coast in Washington State, May saw almost 5,000 more concealed pistol licenses added to the numbers, according to the state Department of Licensing. There has been a steady decline since April 1, 2020 due to COVID-19 shutdowns of services by police agencies. Now that things are opening back up, more people are applying for their CPLs. Renewals have not been troublesome, since they do not require fingerprinting.
