Nadler: ‘Can’t rely on election’ as polls show waning impeachment support

In a stunning moment of candor, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) declared that he and his fellow Democrats, out to impeach President Donald Trump, can’t wait for the 2020 election to unseat the president and must act now, Fox News reported.

“We cannot rely on an election to solve our problems, when the president threatens the very integrity of that election,” Nadler said during remarks as the committee opened its markup session Wednesday evening.
What may sound to many as an expression of urgency to protect the Republic conversely translates to desperation that the president must be removed before he can win next year.
But Nadler and his Democrat colleagues could be digging themselves into a hole as new polling shows public interest in impeachment is waning, especially in three key battleground states, according to Axios.com.
And the Washington Times reported that a majority of Americans now oppose impeachment, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday. That survey revealed 51 percent of registered voters do not want to see Trump impeached, although Democrats remain intent on removing him from office.
Rasmussen Reports noted its own survey results showing 51 percent of likely voters say impeachment is important to their vote in the 2020 elections. According to Rasmussen, 41 percent of survey respondents said they are more likely to vote for a member of Congress who votes to impeach, while 38 percent say they are less likely to do so. However, a majority of likely 2020 voters “do not support impeaching and removing Trump from office,” Rasmussen reported.
Meanwhile, a Politico/Morning Consult survey shows public opinion hasn’t shifted at all on impeachment, with half of registered voters apparently approving of the impeachment inquiry.
But Nadler’s remark that some might suggest was a Freudian slip indicates Democrats want to remove Trump now, long before they face him on the campaign trail.
Ranking Member Doug Collins (R-GA) reminded the committee and the audience that Democrats have been threatening to impeach Trump since he was elected.
According to the Axios.com report, “Quarterly polling by the Republican firm Firehouse Strategies, with Optimus, had President Trump struggling in the mega-battlegrounds of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — but in the newest edition, he beats every Democrat.
“Trump,” according to survey results, “won by an average of six percentage points in hypothetical match-ups against all current Democratic candidates, including Joe Biden, who was performing well in head-to-head contests against Trump in polling conducted earlier in the year.”
Fox noted in its report that the impeachment campaign has “foundered” in several recent polls, and even if the House does vote for impeachment, that issue goes no farther than the U.S. Senate.
But what could this ultimately mean for Democrats in 2020? Many of them are in districts won by Trump in 2016 and they are vulnerable. The country is now a little less than 11 months from the national elections, and that is an eternity in politics. Dynamics change, and so could a lot of faces on Capitol Hill come next November.
